  This paper examines the relationship between industrialization and political mobilization by comparing the development of two Norwegian regions, namely the Oslo Fjord region and Vestlandet. Particular emphasis is put on the differences found between levels of support for the socialist parties by industrial workers in these two regions, which were the most industrialized regions of Norway in the period considered (1900-1960). In the Oslo Fjord region the Labour movement and "Høyre" (the right-wing party) emerged as the dominant players, while the remaining parties (the successors to "Venstre" (the left-wing))acheived a far stronger position in Vestlandet. In general, explanations of this difference are grounded in the idea of the existence of a "counterculture" in Vestlandet, which proved strong enough to resist the pressures of industrialization toward increased support for socialist parties (and "Høyre"). This paper argues instead that these differences must be understood in relation to the fundamentally different types of industrialization that took place in the two regions. It is argued that the organized socialist trade union movements and their parties represented the interests of workers who found themselves within the type of industrialization specific to the Oslo Fjord region, and that these interests were diametrically opposed to those of industrial workers in rural, "proto-industrialization" areas which characterized so much of Vestlandet. The latter group of workers would have found that it was in ther best interests to vote for other non-socialist parties.

  The fascination of auroral phenomena in the polar region has stimulated scientific research in Norway throughout this century. This was extended to a study of the effect of the ionoshere on radiocommunications before World War II. After WWII the ionspheric research community increasingly oriented its work to defece-related topics. Norway's strategicaly crucial position close to Soviet ICBM launch sites and Soviet submarine sea passages ensured US defence agency funding for studies on the pertubing effects of the ionosphere on communications systems during the hottest period of the Cold War. New requirements (a launching base, a telemetry station) imposed the advent of space technologies (sounding rocets, satellites) moved the field to the core of the political process and raised a number of complex security and foreign policy issues in the high north for the Norwegian Government, as well as transforming the character and the institutional base of the research itself.

  Studien gir en historisk oversikt over norsk næringsliv FoU-aktivitet frem til slutten av 1990-årene. fremstillingen skiller mellom utviklingen frem til slutten av 1970-årene da FoU var nært knyttet til tradisjonell industri, og perioden etter som i økende grad viser FoU-aktivitet også i ikke-industriell økonomisk aktivitet.
