Ph.D. fra University of California, Santa Barbara i 1979. Professor i samfunnsøkonomi ved Universitetet i Oslo 1994-2023. Besøk ved Cornell-, Harvard-, Montréal-, Northwestern-, og Stanford-universitetet. Opphold ved institutt for høyere studier i Marseille og Paris.
