Ph.D. from University of California at Santa Barbara in 1979. Employed by the University of Oslo as Professor of Economics 1994-2023. Visitor at Cornell, Harvard, Montreal, Northwestern, and Stanford Universities. Resident at institutes of advanced study in Marseille and Paris.

  • Honorary member of the French Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, 2022.
  • Fellow of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, 2020.
  • The Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters (Det Norske Videnskaps-Akademi), elected member, 2014.
