Thematic collaborative projects

The EU's Framework Programme for Research and Innovation funds collaborative projects that contribute to solving major societal challenges.

Horizon Europe (2021-2027) funds international collaborations within six thematic clusters targeting societal challenges and industrial leadership. The projects must have partners from at least three countries and often require interdisciplinary efforts to address complex and contradictory societal challenges.

Under Horizon 2020 (2014-2020), the Faculty of Social Sciences had success within the thematic calls. Our researchers coordinated three projects (EU3D, Lifebrain, and GLOBUS), and were partners in 11 other projects.

CIDAPE: Climate, Inequality, and Democratic Action: The Force of Political Emotions

Evidence suggests that emotions play a fundamental role in political participation and communication. It is therefore crucial to comprehend and appropriately address citizens’ emotional needs and reactions to climate policies to achieve coordinated democratic action. The project will research the interplay between citizen engagement, climate change and inequalities. By investigating the role of emotions in shaping rational argumentation and engagement, the project aims to gain insights into how people comprehend, and actively respond to, climate change challenges.

environMENTAL: Reducing the impact of major environmental challenges on mental health

The environMENTAL project will investigate how some of the greatest global environmental challenges, climate change, urbanisation, and psychosocial stress caused by the COVID-19-pandemic affect mental health over the lifespan. It will identify their underlying molecular mechanisms and develop preventions and early interventions. Leveraging cohort data of over 1,5 million European citizens and patients enriched with deep phenotyping data from large scale behavioural neuroimaging cohorts, we will identify brain mechanisms related to environmental adversity underlying symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and substance abuse.
