My research focuses on class, inequality, culture, and politics—particularly how these are interconnected. I examine class differences and social inequalities in who holds certain opinions, preferences, and tastes, both in culture and politics. Which parties do people in different social positions vote for, and why do these patterns emerge?
Currently, I am involved in a research project on symbolic boundaries and emotions related to climate and environmental issues. We investigate how attitudes toward environmental problems—and different proposed solutions—are linked to class position and cultural differences.
In both cultural and political life, there are significant social disparities in who participates, follows current affairs, and engages. This poses a democratic challenge, as a core ideal is that everyone should have equal opportunities to take part in and influence politics. In my research, I am particularly interested in what we might call socially unequal relationships to politics. The issue is not just that some people care about politics while others do not, but that there are clear class-based differences in political access and participation. For instance, voter turnout in Norway today varies significantly by class. Understanding why this is the case is crucial.
I am also interested in sociological theory. Sociology bridges empirical and theoretical questions. Empirical research necessarily relies on theoretical concepts and models—be it consciously or unconsciously. Therefore, systematic reflection on concepts, theories, and methods is essential. I am particularly interested in theoretical debates on class, culture and politics, as well as broader questions concerning the relationship between structure and agency. At the same time, I believe sociology is at its best when it illuminates major societal issues through empirical analysis.
