Jørgen's PhD is part of INTRANSIT.

His PhD project focuses on identifying socio-technical drivers and barriers for the development and diffusion of carbon capture and storage technology (CCS) and challenges related to the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors, like the processing industry. In particular, he is looking at the effects new and different user sectors have on both the technological characteristics of CCS and the technology's broader innovation system.

Jørgen's PhD asks questions like: How do the physical and institutional characteristics of new and different sectors affect CCS and its innovation system? What new challenges and opportunities arise as CCS tries to adapt to various industries? How do actors in the innovation system adapt to these challenges and opportunities? What are the effects of new user sectors on the legitimacy of CCS? What are the effects of new user sectors on the development of a ‘dominant design’ and on standardisation and modularisation of CO2-capture technology? The underlying motivation for his research is to understand if, how, and how fast CCS can contribute to decarbonisation. Put another way; if CCS is to play the mitigation role it does in many mitigation scenarios, how can this rapid development and diffusion be brought about?

Jørgen’s broader research interests revolve around sustainability transitions, climate change mitigation, the ‘feasibility’ of achieving various sustainability goals, and understanding how sustainability transitions can be ‘brought about’ and accelerated.
