  Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS) are deeply controversial topics both within and beyond disability studies, involving issues of structural ableism, discrimination, and the right to self-determination. A common defence of the legalization of PAS, as distinct from euthanasia, rests on the right of an individual to freely choose when to end one's life. This essay makes an intervention in this debate by examining the rhetoric of media and cultural narratives that directly and indirectly address the issue of PAS and autonomous choice. Considering these narratives from a biopolitical point of view, I argue that contemporary thanatopolitical narratives draw on a particular rhetorical mode, known as "parrhesiastic rhetoric" or anti-rhetoric. This mode helps frame the testimony of extremely vulnerable individuals as a supremely credible argument in favor of the legalization of PAS. Moreover, it engenders sympathy rather than identification with these narrative subjects, ensuring that the death that is being justified remains at a distance from the reader, safely positioned as the death of others. I further argue that this narrative rhetoric supports a particular, neoliberal conception of autonomy, in which individual subjects are dynamic, rational and self-directing. In neoliberal thanatos political discourse, the choice to die is seen as fundamentally an outcome of individual, informed decision-making. Against this atomistic framework, I deploy the analyses of biopolitical disability studies to contribute to a better understanding of the historical, socio-economic, cultural, and rhetorical forces that shape contemporary debates over euthanasia and PAS.

  Superheroes are often disabled, either literally or metaphorically. Their exceptional powers and abilities may be balanced by weakness in order to engender audience sympathy or identification, or to provide a source of narrative obstacles. Although superhero stories are not necessarily about disability, they have become one of the most accessible and popular formats in which disability is a consistently salient trope and integral part of the narrative machinery. The article argues that the use of disability in current superhero narratives, exemplified by the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is best understood through the theoretical lens of narrative prosthesis and ablenationalism. In the MCU, a core function of disability is to provide heroes with a yearning for normality and a desire to be productive members of a community. The interlinked narratives of the MCU effectively depict many of its protagonists as supercrips, framing disability as intrinsically linked to a heroic struggle to fit in with non-disabled society.

  One of the most commercially successful films of all time, Avatar (2009) is a blockbuster hit that provides a good example for investigating how disability and animality are far more intertwined and complicated than they might appear at first glance. We identify key scenes in Avatar in order to explore what we call “companion prosthetics”, in which transhuman and posthuman interactions and becomings have the potential for being more symbiotic, helping to deconstruct simplistic binaries such as able/disabled and human/animal. Different kinds of prosthesis need to be considered, such as the distinction between those with compensatory and augmentative goals, and the possibility for prosthetics to be associated with pleasure at times, rather than simply negative aspects of impairment. Jake’s fantasy-made-“real” of transcending his wheelchair by transforming into his avatar body by the end of the film can be seen as both an example of “narrative prosthesis” and a more interesting alternative. Choosing “companion prosthetics” over a “cure”—particularly in terms of the interspecies relationship required for the Na’vi to fly—has the potential for modelling utopian, posthumanist, and anti-speciesist visions.

  This paper asks how narrative tropes linked to disability and animality are deployed in a work of (extremely) popular fiction, namely the television series Game of Thrones (GoT). While disability and animality are often not theorized together, we argue that their sites of intersection are highly productive. By investigating the tensions and possibilities that arise when disability and animality meet, we seek new insight into how different forms of embodiment and different lives are culturally (de)valued.
