Cecilia Salinas is a postdoctoral research fellow in Private Lives project at the University of Oslo. You can read about her project her on social media and diversity politics here: What kind of possibilities do digital technology offer to diversity politics in the cultural sector?

Cecilia G. Salinas holds a doctorate in social anthropology from the University of Oslo in 2017. In connection with her PhD she carried out fieldwork in a biosphere reserve in  the provins of Misiones, Northeastern Argentina. She studied what happens when international environmental and climate change policy is implemented in remote areas and the effects on the forest and the local population it intends to protect.

In her postdoctoral research project, she follows up some topics from her PhD work such as politics, identity and belonging, but this time in a Norwegian digital context.

Salinas is also educated at the art school Lomas de Zamora, Buenos Aires (Argentina) and has been a student at the Bruchion Art Institute under the direction of Jan Valentin Sæther. She is therefore interested in the intersection of art and anthropology in the research process. During her fieldwork for the postdoctoral research project, she has created a series of digital collages that are part of a traveling exhibition called ARTivism.

The research project Private Lives  is collaborating with the Norwegian Museum of Science and Technology (NTM) Norwegian acronym) on an exhibition that will open at the end of 2022. Salinas is the contact person for the exhibition and works closely with curator Henrik Treimo and his team at NTM.

Summary

In her thesis Salinas investigates everyday life in Fray Bentos, a working town in a rural area where meat packing for a long time was the core industry. The traditional meatpacking industry has been in decline, but for some time a foreign pulp mill appeared to offer new working opportunities. However, in comparison with the old “socially thick” meatpacking industry with dense employment and a huge impact on employment, the new pulp industry was “socially thin”. Salinas’ investigates everyday life in Fray Bentos and how the initial euphoria associated with renewed industrial modernity soured. Yet she also explores short-lasting glimmers of hope and collective agency in relation to a local carnival. Based on a close fieldwork and her anthropological gaze Salinas has developed an innovative approach to the contradictions of neoliberal everyday life.
