STS methods Lab: the methodological possibilities of doing geographies of science—beyond maps

Dr. Mayline Strouk visits the STS Methods Lab

"In What Would Animals Say If We Asked the Right Questions?", Vinciane Despret wonders "how geography is different from anthropology today", and one colleague responds "geographers draw maps". Despret is satisfied with this answer, as she notices that recent works in geography she has come across indeed all include maps.

In this STS methods lab, I propose to discuss the methodological possibilities of doing geographies of science—beyond maps. Drawing on two empirical studies on the geographies of marine ornithologists' fieldwork in the Arctic and marine stations, I argue that doing geographies of science involves articulating different methods to investigate scientific practices across multiple scales and spatial representations. This session will be an opportunity to discuss how network analysis, ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, or spatial scientometrics can be combined to approach the spatial logics underpinning the production of scientific knowledge."
