About the project

Engineered Living Material (ELM) is emerging as a novel technology which attempts at recreating the functionalities of life such as bio-sensing, self-repair and growth. These technologies are framed to provide a sustainable solution in relation to the current environmental challenges. Technologies as such can become controversial as they do not account for the wider social concerns with their narrow framing. It therefore becomes important to listen to what the public has to say before the technology materializes. However, a tension emerges, on the question of public’s lack of scientific knowledge and that they can’t contribute meaningfully to scientific discussions. The answer to this question lies in the public’s capacity to generate values which comes from the dynamic relationships between science, technology and the society. Through this project, I wish to discuss how these relationships can be studied and how issues can be mapped for a technology that is still in the making.
