Welcome to the first, pre-Christmas gathering of the research network Oil & Society! We meet to learn about each other’s ongoing work and research interests, listen to presentations and watch films about communities of work in the oil industry, and discuss what we want to use the network for in the coming year.
The event is open to anyone interested in participating in the Oil & Society research network. We ask that you register your attendance by Monday 9 December, so we can make sure there is enough gingerbread for everyone. You can register by e-mail to bard.lahn@tik.uio.no.
Event program:
1. Round of presentations
To get to know each other and get an overview of the topics that are being worked on in the network, everyone is welcome to spend 2-3 minutes presenting their own research interests and ongoing work, and how it relates to the network's theme.
2. Oil workers: Imagined communities and imaginaries of transition
- Screening of the film "The Phase-Out Dilemma" (13min), produced by the research project WAGE. In the film, oil workers from Norway and Nigeria discuss who should phase out their oil production first. Ahead of the film, researchers David Jordhus-Lier and Camilla Houeland will talk about how they have used the film medium to study oil workers' climate policy self-understanding.
- Margrete Hestenes from the TOIL project (ILN) will talk about the imagined communities of oil workers from a musical perspective.
3. Plans and proposals for the network's further gatherings
What do we want to use the gatherings in the network for in 2025? Open discussion with suggestions for topics and ways to collaborate.
