  Purpose An overrepresentation of autism spectrum diagnoses (ASD) and autistic traits have been reported among people with gender incongruence. Several quantitative and qualitative studies have highlighted the intersection of autism and gender incongruence (GI). However, we have little knowledge on lived experiences of adolescents experiencing ASD and GI. The study aimed to shed light on lived experience of gender incongruence from the perspective of autistic adolescents. The analysis was guided by the following research question: How do adolescents with ASD and GI experience their bodies and gender in everyday life, and how do they make meaning of the intersection of autism and GI in everyday living? Methods This study is based on semi-structured interview guide alongside life-mode interviews of adolescents experiencing both ASD and GI. We adopted reflexive thematic analysis with phenomenology as the theoretical backdrop. Results The analysis concluded with three overarching meta-themes; “The emergence of the mismatch of gender identity and body in autistic adolescents”, “The hard work of everyday routines – working all day and all night”, and “Experiences of Bodily Estrangement - A Chain Reaction of Discomfort”. Conclusion The findings contribute to the existing literature by emphasising how sensory sensitivities and gender identity distress intensify each other and how the transition from child to adolescence, and the body, is perceived. Results indicate tailored clinical implications for adolescents experiencing ASD and GI. Clinicians should consider multidisciplinary collaboration, individualised and flexible interventions that address both sensory regulation and gender-related support to improve quality of care for adolescents with ASD and GI.

  Background: Self-cutting is often treated as a symptom to be eliminated, with behavioral cessation regarded as a sign of therapeutic success. However, little is known about how individuals experience the absence of self-cutting after it has stopped—especially when the behavior has served complex symbolic, regulatory, and relational functions.Objective: This study explores how women with long-term histories of severe self-cutting experience the cessation of the behavior. It examines why abstaining from or stopping may not be experienced as recovery, but instead as a crisis, rupture, or new forms of suffering.Methods: Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), we conducted and analyzed in-depth interviews with 12 women aged 18–35. All had engaged in repetitive self-cutting for several years and most reported having stopped or being abstinent at the time of the interview. Three cases—Solveig, Angelica, and Rachel—were selected for idiographic analysis to represent divergent ways of making sense of cessation.Results: Each woman experienced the end of cutting differently. For Solveig, cessation led to psychic collapse and emotional disintegration; the scars had functioned as containers of identity and trauma. For Angelica, cutting had regulated emotional extremes, and its absence exposed her to panic and somatic dysregulation. Rachel described a shift from cutting as a mode of survival toward a position in which meaning could increasingly be held in language and relationship rather than on the skin, allowing her scars to function as symbols of survival rather than sites of enactment. Rather than indicating a uniform trajectory of recovery, cessation marked a divergent and meaning-saturated transition shaped by how cutting had functioned psychically for each of them.Conclusion: The study highlights the psychological functions that cutting can serve, and the vulnerabilities that may arise when it stops. Clinicians should be cautious to equate behavioral change with psychological integration. Sustainable transitions away from self-harm require relational containment, narrative support, and symbolic substitution. Cessation may mark the beginning of deeper therapeutic work, not the end.

  Several Norwegian analysts trained at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute established a Norwegian psychoanalytic society (IPA-membership 1934). Due to the emergence of Nazism, Wilhelm Reich and Otto Fenichel ended up in Oslo in 1933/4. Their importance for the development of Norwegian psychoanalysis became immense and dramatic. The IPA Congress in 1949 was a disaster for Norwegian psychoanalysis: exclusion from the IPA. Only after many years did the Norwegian society regain its IPA membership in 1975. Norway's first Professor of psychology, Harald Schjelderup, entering his professorship in 1928, was a psychoanalyst, trained in Vienna. Establishing the depth psychological method as a specific scientific method, Schjelderup's main academic project was the integration of psychoanalysis with general psychological science. Ever since, the Norwegian Psychoanalytical Society has maintained a close relationship with the university. During the last twenty years, Norwegian analysts have developed a most successful programme for psychoanalytic psychotherapy in China and participated in training the first Chinese analysts approved by IPA. Thus, they have made a substantial contribution to the IPA-psychoanalytic training in China, resulting in the establishment of the IPA study group in 2022. The inner life of the Norwegian Society has also renewed an enthusiasm through its development of a new training analyst system.

  Psykologer som tar lederansvar i offentlig helsevesen, trer inn i et krysningspunkt mellom styringskrav og profesjonsetiske forpliktelser. Psykologledere er sentrale premissleverandører for hvordan klinisk praksis utformes og prioriteres. I studien undersøker vi hvordan psykologledere reflekterer over fagetiske dilemmaer i lederrollen. Studien bygger på intervjuer med seks psykologer i lederstillinger ved fire sykehus i Helse Sør-Øst, analysert med refleksiv tematisk analyse. Analysen resulterte i seks temaer samlet under to metatemaer: (1) lederens etiske refleksjonsrom og (2) opplevelse av handlingsrom. Funnene viser at etiske dilemmaer særlig aktualiseres i krysningspunktet mellom klinisk ansvar og helseforetakets styringslogikk. Vi argumenterer for at evnen til å stå i slike spenninger og bære kontradiksjon er en avgjørende forutsetning for etisk og ansvarlig ledelse i offentlig helsevesen.

  The recent paradigm shift within cognitive neuroscience toward predictive processing appears to align with many psychoanalytic conceptualizations of the mind. In this article, we argue that several psychoanalytic concepts, such as projection, transference, wish-fulfillment, and perceptual identity, are particularly compatible with the current neuroscientific conception of the brain as a prediction machine. Specifically, we propose that the concept of projection as used in modern psychoanalysis to explore subjective experience and fantasies is closely analogous to the concept of prediction as it is used to explain the fundamental cognitive functions of the brain. We discuss the implications of this parallelism for understanding the role of homeostasis in psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience, and we also discuss the parallels between insight and surprise in these two fields of mental science. Limitations in drawing parallels between projection and prediction are also addressed. By integrating these two fields, we envision the possibility of tackling subjectivity scientifically.

  ABSTRACT Executive coaching aims to facilitate sustainable behavioural change in leaders, yet outcomes often appear to depend less on specific techniques than on common factors such as alliance and a credible change rationale. We interviewed nine leaders who received a personality-based executive coaching approach integrating a strong working alliance with a Big Five framework and structured feedback. Semi-structured interviews were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Four meta-themes captured participants’ experiences: (1) expectations shaped by prior coaching, (2) learning and applying a shared personality language, (3) trust in the coach and the method, and (4) post-coaching integration. Participants described an early relational bond that made it easier to engage with and internalise the personality framework. They emphasised the coach’s flexible and context-sensitive use of the Big Five – avoiding rigid categorisation – as central to developing self-awareness and sustaining change beyond the sessions. The findings suggest that common relational factors and an accepted psychological rationale may interact to support executive coaching outcomes, offering potential points of dialogue between coaching and psychotherapy research.

  For the modern zeitgeist, with its neoliberal values that prioritize efficiency, individualism, and evidence-based treatments, psychoanalysis provides a provoking and important worldview. Psychoanalysis implies a distinct tragic vision of the human condition that serves as a correction to a culture obsessed with quick fixes and superficial solutions. Contrary to Freud’s own argument that psychoanalysis is embedded within a scientific worldview and cannot be considered a “Weltanschauung,” the authors of this chapter state that understanding the human being with unconscious motivations and vulnerabilities indeed represents a worldview (or Weltanschauung) that is more important than ever before. Roy Schafer’s four visions of reality—the comic, romantic, tragic, and ironic—are used as lenses for understanding what psychoanalysis puts on the table. Cautioning against therapeutic hubris, the therapist’s role as pressured from different angles (e.g. healthcare policies and academia), into an omnipotent position, is discussed. In line with a psychoanalytic vision, the chapter proceeds to present recent findings suggesting that an attitude of professional humility in the psychotherapist is in fact beneficial. Psychoanalysis is argued to be an invaluable perspective that challenges prevailing cultural norms and reminds us of our intrinsic vulnerability and complexity.

  Abstract A growing body of research has found contradictions between self-report symptom inventories and other information sources when evaluating psychotherapy outcomes - a phenomenon described as a paradoxical outcome. Previous studies have highlighted the need to identify patterns of this phenomenon. This article addresses this by conducting a systematic review and meta-synthesis of 12 case studies. Using Thematic Synthesis, two analyses were performed: one identifying manifestations of paradoxical outcome, and one examining researchers’ interpretations. Three meta-themes described the phenomenon: (1) false improvement, (2) false worsening, and (3) invisible change. Across studies, variations in the therapeutic alliance were consistently linked to paradoxical outcome patterns. A fourth meta-theme − (4) the inclusion of uncaptured aspects of psychotherapeutic outcome - highlighted researchers’ interpretations, suggesting that paradoxical outcomes often reflect aspects of therapeutic change not captured by standard symptom inventories. The findings emphasize the need to move beyond linear views of symptom trajectories, to triangulate multiple sources of information, and to interpret symptom changes within the context of patients’ lived situations.   This study explores gender incongruence in young binary transgender men by engaging with historical and recent psychoanalytic theory on transgender identity. Four life-mode interviews were conducted with binary transgender youth assigned female at birth who had recently been referred to medical treatment for gender incongruence. Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). We developed three major themes: (1) relating to the past—challenging experiences of being ostracized and different from peers, which have been transformed after learning about transgenderism and gender-affirming care, (2) gazes on oneself—the participants’ sense of self emerges from the gazes on themselves from the outside that have been internalized as a male identity on the inside, and (3) gender incongruence—the participants are struggling to unify conflicting gazes on themselves from the outside with the gazes on themselves from the inside, which leads to an estranged relation to their bodies and feelings of shame. We suggest that gender incongruence in young binary transgender men arises when the gazes from the inside and the outside are not sufficiently reconciled. The clinical task is to help young transgender men with their negotiations of gender within their concrete everyday life experiences.

  Introduction Research indicates a similar effect of Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) and Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) for borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, there is a paucity in studies investigating the change narrative received from and developed in these treatments. The aim of the present study is to investigate similarities and differences in the change narratives provided by MBT and DBT, and how these narratives reflect the rationale, explanations, and procedures of the provided treatment. Methods The study is a qualitative analysis of seven interviews conducted by the authors. Three of the participants had received MBT, and four of the participants had received DBT. This study presents an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) of the change narratives received in two specialized treatments for BPD. Results The main findings from the IPA were that the change narratives described by the participants reflected the treatment they received. The DBT participants highlighted explicit learning of tools and techniques, with predictable and safe therapists. In contrast, the MBT participants emphasized a long-lasting process of exploring to create procedural learning with therapists who followed their lead. Discussion The participants’ stories of change shed light on how a change narrative was developed, and therefore how the rationale, explanations and procedures were conveyed differently by MBT and DBT.

  In the present study we aim to increase our knowledge of the relationship between childhood trauma and outcome in couple therapy. We samples participants based on their sub-optimal responses to treatment as well as one member of the dyad having reported experiences of childhood trauma. Six participants constituting three couples were included. All data was analyzed using thematic analysis. Our main finding was that when couples are not able to agree ont he goal of their therapy and this is not handled adequately by the therapist, the alliance tends to split. The therapy thus becomes more individually focused at the expense of the couple relationship. Generally, participants did not themselves assess their past traumas as having negatively impacted therapy giving instead credence as to how it has impacted their self-knowledge. In the future, longitudinal studies should be conducted to explore if there is an association across treatment between trauma and the therapeutic relationship, and the influence it might have on outcome. The findings of this study further support the already existing literature on the importance of alliance and elaborates upon how split alliances occur, develops, and constrains therapy.

  Background A common aspect of evidence-based treatments for people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) is pedagogical interventions and formats. In mentalization-based treatment (MBT) the introductory course has a clear pedagogical format, but a pedagogical stance is not otherwise defined. Methods Treatment integrity was quantitatively assessed in a sample of 346 individual MBT sessions. Nine group sessions and 24 individual MBT sessions were qualitatively subjected to interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results The dominating intervention type was MBT Item 16—therapist checking own understanding (31% of the interventions). IPA unveiled the following: (1) a pervasive, but hidden/implicit psychopedagogical agenda, (2) psychopedagogical content seemed precious for the patients, and (3) four tentative strategies for pedagogical interventions in MBT (a) independent reasoning; (b) epistemic trust; (c) mental flexibility; and (d) application of verified insights, knowledge, or strategies. Conclusion Development and clarification of the pedagogical stance in MBT could further improve the quality of therapists' interventions.

  Background: Political values are essential to our sense of self and belonging. Yet the political orientation of clinical psychologists has either been neglected in psychological research or been investigated only in the United States several decades ago. This study therefore aimed to explore political values among psychologists and how they perceive the effect of political values on therapy in Norway. Method: Five clinical psychologists currently in active practice were recruited for semi-structured interviews. Results and discussion: A thematic analysis yielded several distinct themes. Political beliefs appear to play a part in therapy, and may influence both what the therapist thinks about the client and the choice of therapy. Nonetheless, the informants reported that talking about political beliefs in a psychotherapeutic setting was unusual and even uncomfortable for them. Conclusion: We therefore ask whether it is time to break the taboos associated with political values in and around psychotherapy, and conclude that further research should be devoted to this sensitive but vital topic.   Client self-report symptom measures are widely used in counselling and psychotherapy research and practice to track client progress and evaluate outcome. A growing body of evidence indicates differences between self-report assessments and information collected through other sources. This paper considers a range of theoretical and empirical perspectives on this issue, including the concept of illusory mental health. Particular emphasis is given to the relevance of single-case research as a means of identifying different patterns of paradoxical outcome. Implications for practice and research are discussed.

  Defining outcome represents a key challenge for psychotherapy theory, research and practice.The present paper uses a case study of a client with anorexia nervosa to contribute to thedevelopment of conceptual understanding of the nature of paradoxical outcome. In this case,different sources of outcome data offered different answers to the question of whether or not the therapy had been successful. Qualitative thematic analysis of therapy transcriptions was carried out, using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Both the process of change that occurred in this case, and the conflicting outcome indicators, could be explained in terms of a model of affect elaboration. These findings are discussed in terms of the need for caution when interpreting results from outcome measures in psychotherapy research and practice.

  Objective We conducted a meta-synthesis of qualitative research on subjective experiences of gender dysphoria (GD) amongst transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) youth in order to improve clinical encounters, complement existing knowledge and potentially influence future research. Methods We systematically searched for qualitative studies on GD in English, German, Spanish and Scandinavian languages in seven databases. Starting with 2000 articles, we finally included 12 papers in the meta-synthesis, following Noblit and Hare's (1988) seven steps for qualitative meta-synthesis research. Results Through the consistent comparison of key concepts, we were able to cluster the findings from the 12 included studies into four meta-themes: (1) the emerging understanding and awareness of GD was described as navigation in the dark, (2) the importance of relationships and societal norms, (3) the role of the body and the exploration of one's own body and (4) sexuality and sexual impulses. The young person's relation with his or her own body and sexuality influences subjective experiences of GD. The experiences are always mediated in relation with other people and societal norms, and they are both long-lasting and changing. Conclusion The phenomenological analysis indicated that GD is a complex phenomenon involving manifold factors that changes across time and place for each individual. GD is not a static phenomenon but an expression of continuous negotiation amongst the body, its impulses, sexual desire and the relationships in which each person participates. Therefore, clinicians who treat TGNC youth should help them to reflect on this developmental process over time as a complement to medical approaches.

  This study investigates whether fathers’ adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and attachment style reported during pregnancy predict fathers’ perception of child behavior assessed 12 months postpartum, expressed by the Parenting Stress Index (PSI), Child Domain. Prospective fathers (N = 835) were recruited to “The Little in Norway (LiN) study” (Moe & Smith) at nine well‐baby clinics in Norway, with data collection composed of five time points during pregnancy and two time points postpartum (6 and 12 months). The main analyses included linear regression, path‐analysis modeling, and intraclass correlation based on mixed effects modeling. First, linear regression analyses showed that neither fathers’ ACE nor attachment style significantly predicted perceived child behavior postpartum directly. Furthermore, path analyses showed that ACE and less secure attachment style (especially avoidant attachment) measured early in pregnancy strongly predicted negatively perceived child behavior, mediated by fathers’ mental health symptoms during pregnancy and partner disharmony postpartum. Second, intraclass correlation analyses showed that fathers’ perceived child behavior showed substantial stability between 6 and 12 months postpartum. Family interventions beginning in pregnancy may be most beneficial given that fathers’ early experiences and perceptions of attachment in pregnancy were associated with later partner disharmony and stress.

  Objective: Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is an evidence-based long-term treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD). Alliance is central for effective psychotherapies. Few studies have addressed aspects of working alliance in BPD evidence-based treatments. This study aimed to investigate alliance development in MBT therapies with different clinical outcomes. Method: The sample included 155 patients in an MBT programme. Clinical outcomes were based on Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF). The sample was divided in two subgroups according to GAF levels at the end of treatment (cut-off = 60). Working alliance was assessed by patient report (Working Alliance Inventory, subscales, Goals, Bonds and Tasks) and assessed repeatedly over 36 months. The method for statistical analyses was linear mixed models. Results: Initial levels of Goals, Bonds, and Tasks did not differ by subgroup, but change over time differed significantly by subgroup. In the good outcome subgroup, ratings of Goals, Bonds, and especially Tasks increased significantly over time. In the poor outcome subgroup, paranoid PD was associated with poorer alliance development over time. Conclusions: Good outcome therapies were characterized by a process where the working alliance grew over time. Results encourage an explicit focus on tasks in therapy particularly for patients with high levels of mistrust.

  Studies have shown that many clinicians are skeptical about research and hesitant about participating in research. In the present study, we explored this issue by studying experienced therapists’ reflections on their participation in practice-based research. Data were drawn from a practice-based research study at the University of Oslo, Norway. Twelve highly experienced therapists who had contributed to the study were invited to complete an open-ended questionnaire regarding their participation, and the text material was analyzed using a thematic analytic approach. Results indicated that research participation was experienced both as beneficial and demanding, and that being observed by others and following research procedures was experienced as affecting therapists’ clinical work. We discuss these findings in relation to the distinction between “treatment as usual” versus “treatment in a research context”, and offer suggestions for steps to increase the clinical relevance and the ecological validity of psychotherapy research.   The recent paradigm shift within cognitive neuroscience toward predictive processing appears to align with many psychoanalytic conceptualizations of the mind. In this article, we argue that several psychoanalytic concepts, such as projection, transference, wish-fulfillment, and perceptual identity, are particularly compatible with the current neuroscientific conception of the brain as a prediction machine. Specifically, we propose that the concept of projection as used in modern psychoanalysis to explore subjective experience and fantasies is closely analogous to the concept of prediction as it is used to explain the fundamental cognitive functions of the brain. We discuss the implications of this parallelism for understanding the role of homeostasis in psychoanalysis and cognitive neuroscience, and we also discuss the parallels between insight and surprise in these two fields of mental science. Limitations in drawing parallels between projection and pre-diction are also addressed. By integrating these two fields, we envision the possibility of tackling subjectivity scientifically.

  Makt i møte med sjelens irrganger Vi som arbeider psykoanalytisk lever i en tid der vilkårene for å utforske det sårbare, avhengige og redde mennesket er utfordret. Sosiologisk kan vi beskrive vår samtid som senmoderne, kjennetegnet av krav om akselerasjon, effektivitet, identitetstenkning og totalforvaltning av relasjoner. Som helsearbeider, terapeut eller analytiker blir vi ikke bare fristet innenfra, fra våre egne psykologisk problemer, til å tilby behandling på en omnipotent måte, men vi blir også presset fra utsiden, fra helsemyndigheter, akademia og helseprofesjonene til det samme. Jeg vil undersøke makt fra tre perspektiver: For det første, vil jeg kort se på makt i pasientrelasjonen. Hvordan kan terapeutens narsissisme og kunnskap bidra til misbruk av den sårbare pasienten? For det andre, vil jeg drøfte hvordan dagens ideologi i helsevesenet og akademia nesten avkrever at terapeuten skal gjøre det umulige. At vi som terapeuter skal handle som om vi er omnipotente ved å effektivt fjerne pasientens lidelse. Til slutt vil jeg reflektere over organisatorisk makt i helse- og forskningsinstitusjoner. Er et åpent samfunn, jamfør Popper, eller en herredømmefri dialog, jamfør Habermas, en mangelvare? Spørsmålet er om vi har muligheter til å møte makten med det sårbare.

  Vi kan bli inspirert til å skape noe nytt. Et ord, et minne, en følelse, noe vi ser eller hører kan utløser en kreativ impuls. Men hva er kreativitet uttrykk for? Evnen til å tenke kreativt er viktig for fornyelse og problemløsning innenfor de fleste felt i hverdagen. Samtidig kan kreativitet og nyskaping oppleves som en trussel og en utfordring. Det som først oppleves som en inspirasjon, kan i det neste oppleves som en dum tanke. Det å være i en kreativ prosess kan erfares på ulike måter. Hva bidrar til at kreativitet og nyskaping oppleves riktig, meningsfullt? Det finnes mange ulike perspektiver på det kreative og motivasjonen for å skape. På Freudsbar vil vi utforske dette og andre spørsmål som: hva er det kreative, hvor kommer den nye tanken eller ideen fra? Trenger vi inspirasjon, kreativitet og nyskaping? Trenger vi lidelse for å være kreative? Hva fremmer kreativitet og hva hemmer den? Kan noe bli for kreativt? Deltagere i samtalen er Erik Stänicke og Marius Engstrøm. Anders Flækøy Landmark leder samtalen. Utgangspunktet for samtalen er bokkapittelet Den kreative impuls – noen psykoanalytiske perspektiver skrevet av Marius Engstrøm og Erik Stänicke. Kapittelet er i boken Kreativitet i Terapirommet redigert av Unni Tanum Johns, Anders Flækøy Landmark og Line Stänicke. Erik Stänicke er psykologspesialist og ph.d. og er professor ved Psykologisk institutt, Universitetet i Oslo (UiO). Han er også psykoanalytiker og medlem i Norsk Psykoanalytisk Forening og forsker på psykoterapi, psykoanalyse og vitenskapsfilosofi. Marius Engstrøm tok grunnfag i kunsthistorie ved Universitetet i Oslo i 1998. Han hoppet av studiene for å forfølge en karriere som billedkunstner og jobbet som assistent for klassisk maler Eirik Lütken i 1999–2000. Han debuterte på Høstutstillingen i 2005 og stilte ut fast hos Galleri Haaken i Oslo fra 2007 til 2013. Han har mottatt flere stipender og er kjøpt inn av blant annet Norges bank. Engstrøm ble ferdig uteksaminert cand.psychol. i 2018. Han begynte for alvor å fatte interesse for sammenhengen mellom kunst, kreativitet og psykologi/psykoanalyse gjennom arbeidet med sin hovedoppgave, veiledet av Erik Stänicke. Han jobber til daglig som psykolog på Lovisenberg sykehus. Anders Flækøy Landmark er psykoanalytiker og spesialist i klinisk psykologi for barn og unge og spesialist i psykoterapi. Han arbeider ved Spesialpoliklinikken for spiseforstyrrelser, Oslo universitetssykehus. Landmark er også Universitetslektor ved Psykologisk institutt, Universitetet i Oslo. Landmark har skrevet flere artikler og bidratt med kapitler i diverse bøker. I 2016 utga han boken Det uforståelige barnet med Line Stänicke. I 2021 ga han ut boken Psykodynamisk terapi for barn. Sammen med Line I. Stänicke og Unni Tanum Johns har han gitt ut bøkene Lek og kreativitet i psykoterapi med barn og ungdom (20201) og Kreativitet i terapirommet (2025).

  Psykoanalytiske perspektiver på depresjon I dag er depresjon et utbredt fenomen som berører mange, og psykoanalysen har spilt en viktig rolle i vår forståelse av tilstanden. Fra Freuds tid, da han undersøkte forskjellene mellom melankoli og sorg, har psykoanalytiske perspektiver utviklet seg for å reflektere flere aspekter ved depresjon. Den relasjonelle vendingen i psykoanalysen har beriket vår forståelse av hvordan relasjoner former vår mentale helse. Teorier fra både historiske og nyere tenkere – som Klein, Winnicott, Bowlby, Kohut og Green – gir oss viktige perspektiver for å forstå depresjon som en respons på relasjonelle utfordringer som separasjon, avvisning og krenkelse. Foredraget vil belyse disse teoriene og hvordan de kan anvendes i praksis når vi møter pasienter med ulike kliniske problemstillinger. Om sorgprosesser og psykisk smerte Tapsopplevelser og sorg er en del av alle menneskers liv, fra barndom til livets slutt. I den psykoanalytiske teorien er det å sørge tap, ved å erkjenne dem og arbeide med dem, sentralt i forståelsen av både psykisk utvikling og psykisk fungering generelt. Kristiansen vil i dette foredraget se nærmere på hvordan tap og sorgprosesser er nødvendige i den psykiske utviklingen, men også hvordan vanskelig og umulig sorg kan manifestere seg i det psykiske på fastlåste måter – noe vi ofte støter på i den kliniske hverdagen. Tap og sorg ble inngående diskutert av psykoanalysens pionerer; som Sigmund Freud, som har en banebrytende drøfting om forskjellene mellom sorg og melankoli. Melanie Klein viderefører diskusjonen i flere av sine artikler, der mye av hennes tenkning er basert på egne livserfaringer, blant annet da hun mistet sin sønn. Deres drøftinger er ikke mindre aktuelle nå enn da de ble skrevet. I siste del av foredraget vil Kristiansen fokusere spesielt på hvordan tap vekker psykisk smerte, og hvordan vi kan tenke smerte ut fra et psykoanalytisk perspektiv. Det vil underveis bli vist til kliniske eksempler.

  I denne artikkelen oppsummerer vi debatten som kom i kjølvannet av Flaatens bekymringsmelding. Vi er fullt klar over at vi ikke vet hva som faktisk skjedde i terapien, og at det er hennes erfaring som beskrives. Vi tar likevel utgangspunkt i Flaatens beskrivelse fordi den er en viktig påminnelse om å ta klientens opplevelse på alvor. Vi ønsker dessuten å kommentere Flaatens innlegg fordi det skriver seg inn i helt sentrale debatter i terapiforskningsfeltet (se Fors, 2021; Heinonen & Nissen-Lie, 2020; Nissen-Lie & Rønnestad, 2015). Hun peker indirekte på hvor vanskelig det er å skille metoden fra terapeuten. Vi vet at metodisk tilhørighet har stor betydning for terapeutenes identitet, men samtidig er det også kjent at terapeuteffekten er mange ganger større enn metodeeffekten (Wampold & Owen, 2021). Derfor er det relevant å trekke frem den empiriske forskningen på gunstige og ugunstige terapeutegenskaper for å sette Flaatens innlegg og debatten som fulgte, inn i denne sammenhengen. Vi følger Ole Magnus Vik (Vik, 2022a og b), Henrik Berg (Berg, 2020) og sist Kaja Betin (Betin, 2022); ISTDP-debatten reiser en større diskusjon om terapiens grunnlagsproblemer og vitenskapssyn – og til syvende og siste berører de store spørsmål i vårt fag, for eksempel hvordan vi lar oss informere av teori og empiri, hvordan vi ser på vår rolle i klientens endringsarbeid – og spørsmålet om menneskesyn.
