Academic interests

Kristin Asdal has a background in economic history and a PhD in science and technology studies (STS)/history. Since 2009, she has been professor of STS at TIK. Her work combines inspirations from STS, political science and history. She has been particularly interested in the ways in which scientific knowledge interrelates with politics and the shaping of political issues. Reflecting this interest, her doctoral thesis, The Technologies of Politics, offered a broad historical examination of how nature has been formed in technical, scientific and administrative practices.

A key concern in Asdal’s work is the exchanges between natural science and economics – especially as these materialize in political and bureaucratic practices. Her current ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council follows up on this. The aim of the funded project The Little Tools project (2015–2020) is to examine the (little tools of) valuations in the ‘bio-economy’ – and explore valuation practices in market strategies, in the life sciences, and in policy, planning and innovation documents and strategies.

Asdal has taken an interest in method issues in STS and beyond. Amongst the ‘little tools’ she is currently engaged in exploring are ‘documents’ and what they do to offices and practices. She has also taken an interest in feminist studies of science, and the history as well as politics of Science and Technology Studies (STS), and has co-edited several textbooks on the subject. She has published widely on the history and philosophy of science.

Her numerous publications include Humans, Animals and Biopolitics: The More Than Human Condition (co-edited with Tone Druglitrø and Steve Hinchliffe; Routledge, 2017) as well as special issues and articles in journals such as Accounting, Organizations and Society; Environment and Planning A; Science as Culture; Science in Context; Science, Technology and Human Values; Social Studies of Science; and Distinktion.
