Academic interests

Amir's main research interest is in sociotechnical transitions, technological innovation systems, multi-technology and multi-sector dynamics, science, technology and innovation policies, and modeling and simulation, where he has both published and reviewed articles in refereed journals, including Transport Policy, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Technological Forecasting & Social Change.

Research projects

As a postdoctoral fellow at the TIK centre, Amir investigates the dynamics of integrating sociotechnical systems. He, particularly, is interested in investigating the sociotechnical potentials, barriers, and benefits of integrating energy systems, with the aim to contribute to reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The main question is ´what are the main systems challenges – both technical and social, including policy and regulation, routines, standards, decision structures around investments, and the knowledge base – connected to the integration of energy systems?´ This is answered from  a social science perspective, and relevant approaches include for instance technological innovation systems (TIS), studies of diffusion of technology or socio-technical systems analysis. First, a system view using the TIS structural-functional analysis is taken to study both technological and social aspects that influence the integration of renewable and non-renewable energy systems. Then, a more advanced TIS analysis, eg, the mechanism-based explanation (MBE) analysis, is used to identify the systemic problems, blocking mechanisms and poor system functioning under specific contextual conditions.

Background

Amir has a bachelor's degree in Industrial Engineering from Yazd University, Yazd, Iran (2005-2009) and a master's degree in Management of Innovation & Technology from Amirkabir University of Technology, Tehran, Iran (2009-2012). He obtained his PhD in Management in 2021 at the University of Newcastle, Newcastle, Australia. In his PhD dissertation, he conceptualised innovation and industrial change processes, particularly sociotechnical interactions (the interaction of technology, actor strategies, policy, politics, society, and culture) and modeled and simulated such interactions for vehicle powertrain systems in a System Dynamics modeling environment . He supervised several bachelor students' theses at the University of Eyvanakey, Semnan, Iran (2012-2013), and acted as sessional lecturer as well as teaching assistant for MBA courses, and as research assistant at the University of Newcastle (2020-2022) .
