  Nordic countries are renowned for progressive welfare systems and a high quality of life, yet disparities persist between individuals with and without disabilities. This study investigates whether anti-discrimination legislation in these nations enhances socioeconomic outcomes for individuals with disabilities, focusing on subjective well-being, self-rated health, institutional trust, political engagement, labour market participation, and material conditions. The study uses a quasi-experimental design with a difference-in-differences approach, analysing data from the European Social Survey across Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The sample includes 10,974 individuals aged 25–64 reporting significant daily activity limitations due to illness, disability, infirmity, or mental health issues. Outcomes were assessed before and after legislation adoption (2008–2018) using an extended two-way fixed effects model to estimate treatment effects across time and cohorts, with robustness checks via placebo tests and gender stratification. Findings show no significant improvement in subjective well-being, self-rated health, institutional trust, employment, or material conditions following anti-discrimination legislation. A slight increase in voting was observed five waves post-treatment, but placebo tests suggest this may reflect broader trends, not legislation effects. Disability-specific laws in Norway and Denmark showed minor increases in trust and life satisfaction, although parallel trends assumptions held weakly, and placebo results raise questions about causality. We conclude that anti-discrimination laws alone do not substantially enhance socioeconomic outcomes for individuals with disabilities in Nordic countries.

  This article examines how work inclusion for persons with disabilities is conceptualized in Norwegian employment policy, focusing on the Inclusive Working Life (IA) Agreement and its alignment with Article 27 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD). Through a document analysis of six IA Agreement versions, we trace its evolution from an inclusion-oriented approach to a narrower focus on internal labor market issues, particularly sick leave. We interpret this as a shift from civic values, such as rights and societal participation, toward industrial values emphasizing productivity and efficiency. This reflects a broader paradox in Norwegian inclusion policy: ambitious rhetoric paired with limited practical outcomes. We argue that this paradox is not incidental but rooted in normative compromises embedded in Norway’s social policies and in the Nordic welfare model more generally.

  Equalizing opportunities and outcomes between individuals with and without disabilities is a stated goal for most governments in Western welfare democracies. Yet, significant disability-based inequalities remain in many domains of life. One of the causes of this gap is the widespread discrimination of individuals with disabilities. Over the last two decades, most European countries have introduced anti-discrimination legislation to reduce disability-based discrimination. This study examines the impact of anti-discrimination legislation on perceived disability discrimination across 28 European societies using data from the European Social Survey and newly compiled information on disability-related laws. Using a heterogenous difference-in-differences approach, our analysis covers the period from 2002 to 2020, focusing on adults aged 25 to 64 who report disabilities. We find no evidence that anti-discrimination legislative changes reduced perceived disability discrimination in the analyzed countries. There is some supporting evidence, though, that the adoption of an anti-discrimination legal framework, in the long run, was linked with higher perceived disability discrimination among males. We conclude that across Europe, and in keeping with the persistence of disability-based inequalities, legislative efforts have so far been ineffective in combating disability discrimination as perceived by people with disabilities.

  In this study, we examine how people with disabilities are framed in news media discourse in the early 21st century. Using Norway as a case study, we compiled articles from nationwide newspapers from the years 2005 and 2019 into two corpora comprising 149 million words. We utilized a mixed-method approach that situated Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic models in a critical discourse studies (CDS) framework. In both years, topics related to health, crime, paralympic sports, and politics/rights/accessibility predominated. However, we also found a marked shift over the time period toward a ‘personalization’ frame, where news media discourse foregrounded individual disabled people. Our study suggests that an emphasis on personalized stories rather than structural issues risk reproducing the ‘heroic/tragic’ binary of stereotypical representation.

  Individuals with disabilities are likely to be doubly disadvantaged, as they tend to earn less but require more financial resources than individuals without disabilities to maintain an average standard of life. Exploring the links between early-life disabilities and income attainment in adulthood requires high-quality data that allow accounting for selection into disability as well as a comprehensive list of predictors of income attainment. The authors harness the power of Norwegian register-based data and inverse-probability weighting regression adjustment estimators to examine whether individuals born with or who acquire disabilities in early life have lower income attainment at age 32 than individuals in the general population of the country. The results are robust to alternative estimation specifications and suggest that early-life chronic health conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, and impairments, such as sensory loss and physical impairment, are associated with significantly lower income attainment even when individuals’ actual working hours are accounted for among those employed.

  The article presents a narrative analysis on two autobiographies by women writers diagnosed with autism as adults. We analyse the issues related to neurodivergent identity development, masking, and educational trajectory combining performativity theory and cultural psychology.Footnote1 The analysis highlights three main themes: the early life challenges; the diagnosis as a turning point; and the new sense of self involving reflections of the meaning and significance of autistic identities. We claim that the complexity and intersectionality of the neurodivergent identity cannot be reduced to a single trait, and the process of construction happens through a dynamic tension between social suggestions and personal agency.

  It is acknowledged that generous welfare states can provide better outcomes to their populations in terms of objective and subjective indicators of well-being, yet there is little comparative evidence of the role that the welfare state regime plays in lessening disability-based inequalities. Using a large comparative data set of most European societies, Tukey’s honestly significant difference and generalized Hausman tests for six welfare state regimes, we examine the assumption that social-democratic countries perform better in mitigating disability- based inequalities than conservative, liberal, Southern, Eastern European, and the former Soviet Union wel- fare state regimes. We compare the valued outcomes for individuals with and without disabilities regarding their education, labour market participation, material well-being, and life satisfaction. The main finding of this study is that the most generous welfare states in Europe do not perform better, and in some cases, perform worse, than other less comprehensive welfare state regimes in closing the gap in valued outcomes between individuals with disabilities and the rest of the population. We discuss potential explanations of these inequalities such as the nature of expectations and changing characteristics of welfare state regimes, and difficulties related to measuring disabilities across European societies.

  Background: Scandinavian education systems are recognized as being particularly inclusive. Nevertheless, an inclusive approach to education risks adopting a patronizing attitude that silences the voices of the very people who should be included. To discuss the role of epistemic justice in inclusion, we investigated current knowledge about the epistemic injustice experienced by students from immigrant backgrounds in Scandinavia; teacher perceptions of those students; and whether such perceptions influence student–teacher interactions. Do these perceptions lead to disparities? Method: A literature review was conducted focused on studies about the Nordic countries; teacher perceptions of students from immigrant backgrounds aged 6–16; and student–teacher interaction. The corpus included papers in English and the Nordic languages. Eight papers were included and rated by two independent authors. Results: The findings show that teacher perceptions of students from immigrant backgrounds influence student–teacher interaction in both verbal and non-verbal ways. The negative perceptions that teachers held of students from immigrant backgrounds led to experiences of epistemic injustice and epistemic exclusion. The literature provided no information on disparities in special needs education or assessment. Conclusions: Due to the limited literature on this topic, further research needs to be undertaken in order to fully understand experiences of epistemic injustice in schools. Further research into why students from immigrant backgrounds feel excluded and why they are lagging behind is also required

  Abstract During the last few decades, the human rights paradigm has shifted the normative status of disabled people, providing, in principle, the right to full and equal participation. Particularly in neoliberal economies, however, participation in work life is a major constraint on social legitimacy, creating a predicament for people who cannot adhere to the ideal of the ‘productive member of society’. In this article, I explore this predicament at the intersection of disability studies and the sociology of health and illness, reviewing literature and discussing key concepts. I argue that in neoliberal societies, two distinct and largely incompatible pathways to social legitimacy depend, respectively, on (a) a version of the classical sick role and (b) a more recently constituted able‐disabled role. Of these, the first pathway has mainly been explored and critiqued in the sociology of health and illness, while the second features mainly in disability studies. However, both pathways can be understood (1) as ableist mechanisms for maintaining adherence to values of productivity and by (2) imposing on disabled people an unequal burden of invisible work—a key feature of ableism, driving inequality both within the group of disabled people and for the group as a whole.

  Human rights have become the dominant framework for understanding and resolving the marginalization of disabled people. Particularly since the 2007 introduction of the CRPD, many countries have formally adopted policies of ensuring equality by way of this framework. Nevertheless, socio-economic and political equality remain elusive. This article argues that part of the problem is the degree to which the human rights framework, through the principle of ‘undue burdens’, is compatible with an economic model of disability. In this model, full and equal participation for disabled people equates with the ability to perform socially valued roles, particularly in the field of work. This performance in turn requires a burden of invisible, i.e. unpaid and unrecognized work. The article develops the concept of invisible work in the context of disability studies, suggesting that it is an important analytical tool for identifying the shortcomings of the human rights and anti-discrimination framework.

  Individuals who have congenital conditions or become disabled early in life tend to have poorer educational and occupational outcomes than non-disabled individuals. Disa- bility is known to be a complex entity with multiple causa- tions, involving, inter alia, physiological, social, economic, and cultural factors. It is established that social factors can influence educational and occupational attainment for disabled people, and current disability policy in many countries, particularly in the Global North, stress the impor- tance of equality of opportunity. However, there is a scar- city of research that explores the specific degrees to which advanced welfare states contribute to the equalization of life chances for individuals with early-life impairments and chronic health conditions. In this study, we use a Norwe- gian sample of high-quality register data on individuals with vision loss, hearing loss, physical impairment, type 1 diabe- tes, asthma, and Down syndrome diagnosed early in life and compare their intergenerational income mobility trajecto- ries with a random sample drawn from the country's entire population. We find that individuals' early-life diagnoses are linked to significantly worse income outcomes in adulthood than what is observed among the general population. We conclude that even in one of the most advanced egalitarian welfare states, such as Norway, much remains to be done to equalize life chances for individuals with early-life impair- ments and chronic health conditions.

  Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS) are deeply controversial topics both within and beyond disability studies, involving issues of structural ableism, discrimination, and the right to self-determination. A common defence of the legalization of PAS, as distinct from euthanasia, rests on the right of an individual to freely choose when to end one's life. This essay makes an intervention in this debate by examining the rhetoric of media and cultural narratives that directly and indirectly address the issue of PAS and autonomous choice. Considering these narratives from a biopolitical point of view, I argue that contemporary thanatopolitical narratives draw on a particular rhetorical mode, known as "parrhesiastic rhetoric" or anti-rhetoric. This mode helps frame the testimony of extremely vulnerable individuals as a supremely credible argument in favor of the legalization of PAS. Moreover, it engenders sympathy rather than identification with these narrative subjects, ensuring that the death that is being justified remains at a distance from the reader, safely positioned as the death of others. I further argue that this narrative rhetoric supports a particular, neoliberal conception of autonomy, in which individual subjects are dynamic, rational and self-directing. In neoliberal thanatos political discourse, the choice to die is seen as fundamentally an outcome of individual, informed decision-making. Against this atomistic framework, I deploy the analyses of biopolitical disability studies to contribute to a better understanding of the historical, socio-economic, cultural, and rhetorical forces that shape contemporary debates over euthanasia and PAS.

  This paper aims at establishing a dialogue between philosophy and psychology about the conditions and the process through which humans build epistemic relationships during ontogenetic development. By the latter term, we mean any form of interaction which is aimed at producing a belief about some relevant aspects of the world, present or absent, past or future and at assessing its degree of epistemic trustworthiness. The paper is built as a dialogue between a philosopher and a psychologist, who present different faces of the problem of epistemic legitimation respectively and discuss the possible ways in which the dialogue can lead to theoretical advancement in understanding the development of the human epistemic subject. The chapter is divided into four sections: in the first section, we outline how we develop ontogenetically as epistemic subjects, and the sense that our epistemic life depends on other people’s words or testimony; in the second section, we deal with the notion of epistemic injustice and epistemic silencing; in the third section, we discuss strategies to counter epistemic silencing and; in the fourth part, we try to elaborate a synthesis and suggest a new beginning.

  As part of Oslo Internasjonale Teaterfestival 2022, Black Box teater's programming dramaturg Elin Amundsen Grinaker met with Danish poet Caspar Eric and Norwegian writer Bjørn Hatterud for a conversation about disability, language and power. At the heart of the matter lies the question: Can art be an agent of change in a society in which the value of a body is measured by its productivity? That is: can art change how forms of embodiment are valued and perceived, and the social structures in which our bodies and minds are embedded? Moving between levels of lived experience and critical analysis of disabling cultural and economic systems, the conversation touched upon the temporalities of pedestrian crossings, the invisible work of navigating inaccessible public and social spaces, and the stress and burnout associated with the ever-increasing demand for hyper-productivity in the modern labour market.
