Adaptation: Combining Old and New kNowledge to Enable Conscious Transformation to Sustainability
The objective of AdaptationCONNECTS is to develop new understandings of whether and how different types of transformations can contribute to successful adaptation to climate change.
About the project
A key challenge for the 21st century is to hold global average temperature increases to below 1.5°C while also adapting to the current and anticipated impacts of climate variability and change. Climate change is more than a technical problem that can be solved through greater expertise, more innovations, and better management. It is better described as an adaptive challenge that has technical elements, but is also linked to beliefs, values, worldviews and paradigms. AdaptationCONNECTS responds to the need for a more integrated, holistic perspective on adaptation and transformations to sustainability by exploring the relationship between adaptive and transformative change.
The research will focus on four characteristics of adaptation that are likely to contribute to transformative change: collaboration, flexibility, creativity, and empowerment. The results of this project include the identification of effective leverage points, tools and processes for scaling up successful adaptation to climate change. The project will also train and mentor young and early career researchers to develop integrated approaches to complex problems.
Three spheres of Transformation
The research in AdaptationCONNECTS draws on integral theory and theories of social change and adaptation. From this the three spheres of transformation framework has been developed as a tool to understand outcomes for sustainability. The framework draws attention to the interacting domains where transformations to sustainability can occur. These domains are referred to as the practical, political and personal spheres of transformation. For more about the three spheres of transformation here.
The Research Council of Norway awarded a grant to this project under the FRIHUMSAM's Toppforsk program.
