Documents Using the article Document Class

If you want to produce tagged PDF files using the article document class, you can use this template as a starting point:

  • Template for creating tagged PDF files with the article document class
  1. Document class and packages: Start by defining the document class with \documentclass{article}. This specifies that the document is an article. Then include the necessary packages:
    • \usepackage[tagged]{accessibility}: This package improves the accessibility of the PDF document, which is important for screen-reader users.
    • \usepackage{graphicx}: This package allows you to insert images.
    • \usepackage{pdfcomment}: This package is used to add comments to the PDF.
    • \usepackage{hyperref}: This package allows you to create hyperlinks in the document.
  2. Hyperlink settings: Use \hypersetup to configure the properties of hyperlinks in the document. Replace the values in curly brackets with your own information:
    • pdftitle: The title of your document.
    • pdfauthor: The author’s name.
    • pdfsubject: The subject or topic of the document.
    • pdfkeywords: Keywords that describe the content.
    • pdfproducer and pdfcreator: You can usually retain the default values, LaTeX and pdflatex.
  3. Document content:
    • Begin the content section with \begin{document}.
  4. Ending the document:
    • End the document with \end{document}.

Documents with Images That Need Alternative Text

  • To add images, use the following command: \pdftooltip{\includegraphics[width=0.5\textwidth]{path/to/your/image.jpg}}{This is alternative text for the image}.
  • Here, width specifies the width of the image, and path/to/your/image.jpg is the file path to the image in your LaTeX environment. Add the alternative text as the final argument in \pdftooltip.
  • Enter the document content as ordinary text below the image insertion command.

Documents Produced with Beamer

At present, the accessibility package does not work with Beamer. To create tagged PDFs from documents produced with Beamer, you need to use Adobe Acrobat. Adobe Acrobat is available through the UiO Software Kiosk.

  1. Open the document in Acrobat: From the menu, select File, then Open. Select the PDF document produced with Beamer.
  2. Export the document to PowerPoint: From the menu, select File, then Save As Other. Then select Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation.
  3. Save the document as a PDF in PowerPoint: Open the file in PowerPoint. Then select File and Save As. Select Save as PDF to create a tagged PDF file.
