Gender dimensions of extremism

Gender dimensions are integral to understanding extremism, yet unraveling how gender intersects with extremist actors, organizations, and movements can be complex. Our aim is to delve into how gender identities, values, norms, and behaviors shape views and ideologies, examining the roles of both men and women. We investigate how gendered norms and values influence political identifications and outcomes.

Though the link between gender and extremist movements is widely examined, the focus often narrows to women's roles in de-radicalization efforts. While acknowledging this focus, we aim to broaden the discourse: How do gender dimensions intersect across multiple levels of engagement and disengagement? What implications arise for in-group and out-group identifications and conceptualizations?

Key questions

  • To what extent do gender analyses enhance our understanding of extremism?
  • In what ways are notions of gender roles or femininity/masculinity integral to extreme ideologies, shaping the construction of heroes and enemies?
  • What roles do masculinity and femininity play in processes of engagement and disengagement?
  • How do conceptualizations of gender influence policy recommendations and outcomes?
