Academic interests

Xenia Kelemen’s doctoral research focuses on European security and defence integration. In her dissertation, she explores how recent crises – such as the war in Ukraine and shifting US commitments – have shaped the demand for differentiated defence integration in Europe and examines the implications of the emerging security architecture for non-EU states.

Her interests include broader topics of European foreign and security policy, such as EU crisis management, the EU as an international actor, EU Israel-Palestine policy, and democratic erosion as a security concern.

Background

Prior to starting her PhD, Xenia worked as a research assistant on the ERC-funded ELDAR (The Emergence, Life, and Demise of Autocratic Regimes) project at the University of Oslo, which investigated various aspects of autocratic politics. Before that, she worked at Körber-Stiftung’s International Affairs Department in Berlin, where she covered various topics within German and European foreign and security policy. She was responsible for the Berlin Foreign Policy Forum and the Körber Policy Game, among other projects.

Xenia holds a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Groningen and an M.Phil. in Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Oslo.
