Helene Sjursen
Academic Interests
Helene Sjursen's main fields of acacemic interest include the EU as an international actor, EU's foreign and security policy and EU enlargement.
Background
Helene Sjursen has been at ARENA since 1997. She has previousy worked as a lecturer in politics at the University of Glasgow and the University College Dublin. She holds a Ph.D. in international relations from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).
Sjursen was Visiting Research Fellow at the European Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the lent and summer term of 2006. She was also a Nordic Visting Fellow at the International Relations Department at LSE in 1999.
Awards
- Prize for Most downloaded Special Issue of the Journal of European Public Policy in 2007 and 2008. ‘What kind of power: European foreign policy in perspective’ (2006), 13:2. (2009)
- Anna Lindh Award (2006) for outstanding contributions to research in the field of European Foreign and Security Policy Studies. The award is initiated by three European foundations - Compagnia di Sao Paolo (Turin), Riksbankens Jubileumsfond (Stockholm) and Volkswagen Stiftung (Hanover).
Positions held
Helene Sjursen is a member of the government-appointed EEA (European Economic Area) Review Committee since 2010.
Projects
Helene Sjursen co-chairs the work-package on the Foreign and Security Dimension of the 5-year long ARENA-led and EU Commission funded (€ 5 million) research project RECON – Reconstituting Democracy in Europe (RECON), which has 19 partner universities across Europe.
Sjursen also heads the work-package on the 'external dimension of the political order' in the large Norwegian Research Council-funded Eurotrans-project at ARENA.
Sjursen was head of the work-packages on External Security and Justifying Enlargement of the 3-year long ARENA-led research project CIDEL Citizenship and Democratic Legitimacy in the EU, which included ten partners in six European countries, and was financed by the Fifth Framework Programme (€ 1.6 million).
