Academic interests

Helene Sjursen's main research interests include theories of international relations, democracy and foreign policy, the EU's external policies, EU enlargement, and Norwegian foreign policy. 

Project coordination

Scientific Coordinator of the project Reconsidering European Contributions to Global Justice (GLOBUS), which is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020. GLOBUS has eight partner universities from Norway (coordinator), Italy, Ireland, Germany, South Africa, Brazil, China and India (2016–2020).

Coordinator of the research project The legitimacy of EU foreign and security policy in the age of global contestation (LEGOF), financed by the Research Council of Norway’s research initiative ‘Europe in Transition’ (2018-2021). 

Chair of the work package The domain of foreign and security policy at times of crisis of the EuroDiv project (Integration and Division: Towards a Segmented Europe?), financed by the Research Council of Norway’s research initiative ‘Europe in Transition’ (2013–2018).

Leader of ARENA's internal research group for EU foreign- and security policy. 

Completed projects

Chaired the work package The external dimension of the political order of the EuroTrans project (The Transformation and Sustainability of the European Political Order). The work package examined the core characteristics of the ongoing processes of reconfiguration and consolidation in the field of foreign and security policy (2007-2012).

Co-chaired the work package The foreign and security dimension of the ARENA-coordinated and EU-funded (€5 million) research project Reconstituting Democracy in Europe (RECON), with 19 partner universities across Europe (2007-2011).

Awards

Background

Sjursen has been at ARENA since 1997. She has previousy worked as a lecturer in politics at the University of Glasgow and University College Dublin. She holds a Ph.D. in International Relations from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

She was Visiting Research Fellow at the European Institute, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in the lent and summer term of 2006. She was also a Nordic Visting Fellow at the International Relations Department at LSE in 1999.
