Manchester Institute of Innovation Research has appointed Maria Karaulova, an excellent young scholar to support OSIRIS.

Maria completed her PhD in Manchester entitled “Nanoscience on the move: The Impact of Global Scientific Mobility on Academic Research and Career Development” under the supervision of Philip Shapira and Ian Miles. The thesis explores the emergence of hierarchically structured global academic labour markets and global academic careers by focusing on career development strategies of Russian-speaking scientists. Maria’s research critically engages with the literature on productivity of foreign-born scientists and engineers in countries like USA, UK and Germany. It formulates a number of challenges and barriers that hinder potential contributions from scientists, especially in technology transfer and outreach.

Maria published in Technological Forecasting and Social Change and Scientometrics on topics related to institutional change in public research organisations in developing countries, nanotechnology, and path dependence in research systems. The full list of publications is available at her Google Scholar page.
