  Labour regimes organize the economy; they also organize lives. With the continued deregulation of the labour market and the simultaneous drive to cut labour costs, there lies a challenge to grasp not only the workings of capital but also the way such processes impact on the organization of everyday labouring lives. This implies a focus that is attentive to value, combining political economy with moral economy. I suggest that household analysis represents one way to address such issues. Household analysis provides a means of ethnographic access to a particular temporal dynamic that is revealing of a layered texture of precariousness, capturing at one and the same time the material realities and the intimate relations of living. Regimes of labour and regimes of value can thus be brought into the same frame, indicating relational dependencies as well as structures of social inequality. Drawing on earlier ethnography amongst landless tobacco growers in Corrientes, Argentina, I draw attention to the potentials of a particular perspective, all the while paying attention to the specific historical and political context. Anthropology is well placed to grasp contemporary configurations of labour and how these both are framed by and contribute towards reproducing social and economic inequalities, not only locally but also at a more global scale.

  Today, it often seems as though Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ARTs) have reached a stage of normalization, at least in some countries and among certain social groups. Apparently some practices – for example in vitro fertilization (IVF) – have become standard worldwide. The contributors to Assisted Reproduction Across Borders argue against normalization as an uncontested overall trend. This volume reflects on the state of the art of ARTs. From feminist perspectives, the contributors focus on contemporary political debates triggered by ARTs. They examine the varying ways in which ARTs are interpreted and practised in different contexts, depending on religious, moral and political approaches. Assisted Reproduction Across Borders embeds feminist analysis of ARTs across a wide variety of countries and cultural contexts, discussing controversial practices such as surrogacy from the perspective of the global South as well as the global North as well as inequalities in terms of access to IVF. This volume will appeal to scholars and students of anthropology, ethnography, philosophy, political science, history, sociology, film studies, media studies, literature, art history, area studies, and interdisciplinary areas such as gender studies, cultural studies, and postcolonial studies.

  This book approaches law as a process embedded in transnational personal, religious, communicative and economic relationships that mediate between international, national and local practices, norms and values. It uses the concept "living law" to describe the multiplicity of norms manifest in transnational moral, social or economic practices that transgress the territorial and legal boundaries of the nation-state. Focusing on transnational legal encounters located in family life, diasporic religious institutions and media events in countries like Norway, Sweden, Britain and Scotland, it demonstrates the multiple challenges that accelerated mobility and increased cultural and normative diversity is posing for Northern European law. For in this part of the world, as elsewhere, national law is challenged by a mixture of expanding human rights obligations and unprecedented cultural and normative pluralism enhanced by expanding global communication and market relations. As a consequence, transnationalization of law appears to create homogeneity, fragmentation and ambiguity, expanding space for some actors while silencing others. Through the lens of a variety of important contemporary subjects, the authors thus engage with the nature of power and how it is accommodated, ignored or resisted by various actors when transnational practices encounter national and local law.   Min skam er tvetydig. Den er kjønnet. Den er smittsom. Den er koblet til ære og knyttet til seksualitet, og den handler om moral. l hvert fall i utgangspunktet. Ære og skam inngår i samme meningskjede og utgjør vesentlige uttrykk i en partikulær moralsk orden. En slik moralsk kode forankrer og ordner sosiale relasjoner på grunnlag av forskjeller og hirarki. I teorien er det ikke rom for ære og skam i det moderne samfunn. I praksis, derimot, er virkligheten en annen. Det er den sosialantropolgiske tilnærmingen til skam - og ære - som danner grunnlaget for mine refleksjoner. Dette innebærer blant annet en forståelse av som skam som et sosialt fenomen og et perspektiv som sikter mot å utforske lokale og konkret forståelser av skam. Kontekst er en nøkkel for å begripe skammens ulike betydninger. Ære og skam inngår i samme meningskjede og utgjør vesentlige uttrykk i en partikulær moralsk orden.   Even though it is unproblematical to accept an assumption that no society or culture has only one single model of gender or a single gender system,but rather a multiplicity of discourses on gender, and ways of being engendered (Moore 1994: 55), this position still seems to acknowledge the presence of dominant discourses which in some way will overdetermine or subordinate other discourses of gender (Moore 1994; Cornwall & Lindisfarne1994) Thus in the study of intra-cultural variation there lies a challenge in understanding the nature of the link between the dominant discourses of gender, and the representations embedded in them, and other diverting discourses. One approach to meet this challenge would be to explor whether - and how - various discourses on and representations of gender are mutually implicated and constitutive of each other. This paper seeks to do precisely that by examining and comparing heterosexual and male homosexual discourses in a Mexican mestizo context.

  The paper explores some of the debates about culture and the concept of culture as it is used and deployed in the Norwegian public sphere. More specifically it focusses on the role of anthropologists in influencing the meanings and usages of such a key indigenous concept as culture.

  Mexican mestizo gender imgaery is deceptively simple, represented through categorical and essentialist classifcations of male and female. However, the essentialist notions which ground gender as unambiguous simultaneously work so as to disrupt the seemingly unequivocal categories of male and female. This article explores the way gendered distinctions are generated by examining the interconnections between heterosexual and male homosexual gender discourses in two Mexican mestizo contexts.
