Abstract

Sheep farming in South Greenland offers a way into questions of land use, multispecies relations, and rural life in the Arctic. In this talk, Sara will present material from six months of ethnographic fieldwork on small-scale sheep farms in Kujalleq, centered on everyday practices such as lambing, grass cutting, fencing, herding, and the autumn sheep gathering (savaarniaq). Working through participant observation and autoethnographic notes, she has followed how relations between sheep, farmers, dogs, horses, machinery, and landscape are made through work, care, and seasonal rhythms. These practices complicate familiar ideas of Arctic nature as wilderness and bring into view the farm as a place where agronomic knowledge, lived experience, Greenlandic understandings of land and hunting, and longer colonial histories sit side by side. The talk stays with material that is still unfolding and uses it to think through questions that are shaping the early stages of her master thesis at SAI.

This will be a hybrid seminar, with in-person attendance at SAI and digitally on Zoom.
