Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and the growing uncertainty over U.S. support under a potential Trump administration have prompted Europe’s political elites to rethink their approach to defense and security. Germany is one of the European countries with the biggest increase in military spending in response to these events, thereby providing an interesting case study.

This research project focuses on how the general public in Germany perceives and responds to governmental meta-narratives on rearmement and constructs their own narratives about it.
