Academic interests

I apply cultural and community psychology, decolonial perspectives, and African communitarian philosophies of personhood to understand how people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions are shaped by their cultural and social environments, and how, in turn, people actively shape these environments. In doing so, I focus on the dynamic interaction between culture, context, and psychological processes. My specific research interests include:

  • African and Indigenous Psychology
  • Decolonial theory (decolonizing knowledge and being)
  • Interpersonal violence with emphasis on intimate partner violence (IPV)
  • Masculinities and IPV
  • Personhood and agency
  • Cultural psychology of child development and learning (indigenous knowledge about child-rearing practices)
  • Psychosocial experiences of persons with disability
  • Qualitative research methodologies
