Minds in motion - Yoga for patients with complex trauma experiences

Body- and mindfulness-oriented approaches, such as yoga, are increasingly used for mental health problems, and there is some empirical support that yoga can be beneficial for trauma-related problems.

The aim of the project:

The aim of the project is to develop knowledge that can contribute to improved and more knowledge-based care for a vulnerable patient group.

Objectives

The objective is to develop knowledge about yoga as treatment for patients with complex trauma experiences (CTE), through 1) a knowledge status of patients with CTE's experiences with yoga as treatment, 2) a description of the possibilities and limitations of yoga as treatment for patients with CTE from a patient perspective, 3) a description of the possibilities and limitations of yoga as treatment for patients with CTE, from a yoga therapist perspective.

Outcomes

The results from the project will contribute to a) knowledge-based practice where patients' and therapists' experiences contribute to informing professional decisions and clinical practice, and b) further research into the effect and implementation of yoga as treatment for patients with CTE.

Research questions

1) What is the status of knowledge internationally about how patients with CTE experience yoga as treatment?

2) What possibilities and limitations do patients with CTE experience with yoga as treatment?

3) What possibilities and limitations do yoga therapists experience with yoga as treatment, for patients with CTE?
