The PhD Project

It is common that foster parents struggle with their caregiving role. This poses a significant risk for the breakdown of foster families, especially in regard to children with moderate to severe relational and/or attachment problems. Therefore, foster parents often get support.

This PhD project aims to provide an in-depth understanding of foster parents’ emotional and relational struggle in their caregiving role for foster children, which is a prerequisite for the development of better treatment programs for foster children and their families.

We will explore the foster parents’ experience of support in managing the caregiver role, their own attachment history, how this affects them in relation to their foster child, and observe how this plays out in structured observation.
