Academic interests

I am a researcher at the Center for Lifespan Changes in Brain and Cognition (LCBC). Why do some people experience marked declines in brain structure and cognition with age, while others maintain function well into later life? My research aims to answer this question by examining how and when genetic and environmental factors across the lifespan shape individual differences in brain and cognitive aging. To address these questions, I combine MRI and cognitive data, integrating large legacy datasets with registry, survey, and experimental data.

My work has been published in journals such as Nature Medicine, Nature Communications, Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science, and eLife, among others, and includes both theoretical and methodological contributions. I am also a co-creator of the R-package ggseg, design for visualizing brain atlases within the ggplot2 framework.

Currently, I am working on projects examining how lifespan factors influence brain aging, as well as the existence, causes, and consequences of secular trends in brain structure throughout the 20th century.
