Erik Løhre: Uncertain words in an uncertain world

Uncertainty is inherent in decision-making, but recent political upheavals and the climate crisis have made it central. This talk explores the dilemma of expressing uncertainty: While transparency is ideal, politicians and decision makers may fear appearing incompetent or ignorant. I review recent research on social and reputational factors influencing expressions of (un)certainty, and how people comprehend and respond to uncertainty.

Erik Løhre is Associate Professor in the Department of Leadership and Organizational Behaviour at BI Norwegian Business School. His research focuses on judgment and decision making, with uncertainty and uncertainty communication as a core topic. He studies how people think and talk about uncertainty, and how they react to uncertainty expressed by others. Erik usually uses an experimental approach to answer questions that have real-world implications, such as communication of uncertainty in the context of climate change, advice taking, and how people estimate different types of tasks.
