While it was long assumed that class had lost much of its relevance in explaining voting behaviour, it is now reasonably well-established that class voting has been reconfigured rather than merely declined. Class has reasserted its significance as a key line of division in political behaviour, alongside other dimensions such as gender and regionality. Parallel to this ‘return of the repressed’ in politology, theories of class and inequality have also evolved. Two notable developments are the strong emergence of Bourdieusian perspectives on class and the increasing influence of intersectional thinking, which emphasises the interplay between various forms of power and inequality. In this chapter, we integrate these theoretical advancements to explore class voting by examining how class interacts with gender in shaping political voting intentions. Starting from the model of social space first proposed in Distinction, we employ Chi-Squared Automatic Interaction Detection (CHAID) to analyse how class voting is fractured by this second dimension of inequality. The result is a complex web of intersections, where familiar patterns of voting preferences intersect in new and revealing ways.
