About
A joint research programme for the period 2007-2011 has been initiated between the Center of South East Asian Social Studies in association with the Postgraduate and Research Centre of Local Politics and Regional Autonomy at the Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia), the Department of Political Science and Public Policy at the University of Colombo (Sri Lanka) and the Department of Political Science, University of Oslo (Norway).
The principal objectives of this collaboration are: (i) to conduct comparative research on the role of democracy in the context of power relations and conflict in Indonesia and Sri Lanka; and (ii) to strengthen the capacity of public service oriented research and research training on democracy, power and conflicts. The research programme will combine commissioned reports based on pre-existing research knowledge, new research on selected themes to address critical knowledge gaps and overarching synthesising, and comparative analyses based on these commissioned reports and strategic research projects. This will be achieved through an institutionalised collaboration between senior academic staff and doctoral candidates within political studies (primarily political science, political anthropology and political geography) at the three participating universities, in close contact with associated partners such as the Indonesian research institute Demos, the Social Scientists' Association of Sri Lanka and the Indonesia programme at the The Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV).
