How GPs understand patients´stories. A qualitative study of benzodiazepine and minor opiate prescribing in Norway.

Show summary
The objective is to understand the decision-making of doctors when prescribing benzodiazepine (BZDs) in general practice, by analyzing the doctors interpretation of patients´stories. Semi structured interviews were undertaken with 38 general practitioners with previously known level of prescribing. The last three patients who had been given BZDs were specifically discussed. There seems to exist a set of models that serve to facilitate doctors´precribing decisions. In daily practice such models might have a place, but it is important for doctors to be aware that simplification might occur at rthe cost of more complete treatments including councellng and enabling.

Show summary
The doctor-nurse relationship has traditionally been a man-woman relationship. However, in resent years, the number of women studying medicine has incresed in all West-Europesn countries, and in 1997, 29% of active Norwegian doctors were women. The doctor-nurse relationship has often been described as a dominant-subservient relationship with a clear understanding that the doctor is a man and the nurse is a woman. This article examines what happens to the doctor-nurse relationship when both are women: how do female doctors experiece their relationship to female nurses? It is based on two sets of data, qualitative intervievs with 15 doctors and a nationwide survey of 3589 doctors. The results show that in the experience of many doctors, male and female, the doctor-nurse relationship is influenced by the doctors' gender. Female doctors often find that they are met with less respect and confidence and are given less help than their male colleagues. The doctors' own interpretation of this is partly that the nurses' wish to reduce status differences between the two groups affects female doctors more than male, and partly that there is an "erotic game" taking place between male doctors and female nurses. In order to tackel the experience of differential treatment, the strategies chosen by female doctors include doing as much as possible themselves and making friends with the nurses. The results are considered in light of structural changes both in society at large and within the health services, with emphasis on the recent convergence of status between the two occupational groups.

Kapitlet kaster lys over hvordan dette kunne skje.

Collecting objects as a practical game. Prelude to a theory of "safe kicks".
Show summary
A game is a social form with an aspect of adventure. People invent opportunity in life and derive excitement and depth of experience from lasting engrossment in complex games. Collecting objects is analyzed as a case in point. The characteristic structure of this socially constructed activity in which play can take place invites large investments of time, labor and often money and calls for intense emotional and intellectual involvement. Once mastered, it allows for negotiations in otherwise distinct categories¿work and leisure, fact and fiction, safety and risk. Viewed from the standpoint of relational theory, voluntary commitment to any demanding and rule-governed activity mediate individuality in the face of society.
