Academic interests

Cultural and political sociology. Themes: migration, ethnicity/race, identities, social movements, globalization, public spheres, youth, sport, theorizing.   Methods: qualitative research interviews, focus-groups, photo-elicitation, web-ethnography, comparative case studies.

Background

My PhD-scholarship (1995-99) was connected to the establishment of an interdisciplinary research network on International Migration and Ethnic Relations at the University of Bergen. In the course of my postdoc research, I was a visiting fellow at Goldsmiths College, University of London (2000) and at Yale University (2003). From 2009 to 2014 I worked as professor in Sociology at the University of Bergen (2009-14) where I taught courses on migration, race and racism, transnationalism, sociological theory and social movements.

Contemporary research

I am presently working with a project on antiracism in Norway with other colleagues in the department. We are interested in different aspects of Norwegian antiracism as a social movement. Among our foci are differences between generations of activists, identity dilemmas within the movement, and imaginaries of the future in Norway.
