Academic interests
Arnfinn H. Midtbøen's research centers on immigration, integration and ethnoracial inequalities, including topics such as discrimination, citizenship, labour migration, descendants of migrants in education and work, and the history of migration research. Midtbøen combines a range of methods in his research, including field and survey experiments, qualitative interviews, document analysis and traditional surveys.
Courses taught
Midtbøen coordinates the department's introductory course in sociology as well as the BA course on migration, integration and inequality. He also teaches on the use of field and survey experiments in the social sciences, in a PhD course on advanced statistical methods.

Background
Midtbøen holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Oslo (2013). From 2008 to 2022 he was employed at the Institute for Social Research (ISF) in Oslo. He has been Professor of Sociology at the University of Oslo since September 2021.
Midtbøen has been a visiting scholar at Princeton University (2012), The Graduate Center, City of New York (2017), and Sciences Po (2023). He is member of the editorial board of the Norwegian Journal of Sociology and Norway Country Expert for Global Citizenship Observatory (GLOBACIT) at the European University Institute in Florence. In 2015, Midtbøen established the IMISCOE research cluster Discrimination in Cross-National Perspective in collaboration with Rosita Fibbi and Patrick Simon. In the period 2016-2020 he was the editor of the leading Norwegian social science journal, Journal of Social Research. When The Young Academy of Norway was established in 2015, Midtbøen was picked out as one of the 20 first members, and he was member of the Young Academy board in 2017-18. In 2021-22, Midtbøen headed a government-appointed commisson on the integration of labour migrants in Norwegian society. The committee submitted its report to the Minister of Labour and Social Inclusion in December 2022.
Midtbøen's research has appeared in journals such as Proceedings of the National Academy of the Sciences (PNAS), Annual Review of Sociology, British Journal of Sociology, European Sociological Review, International Migration Review, Ethnic and Racial Studies, and Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.
