Hybrid teaching

The definition of hybrid teaching can vary depending on who you are and where you are. But in its simplest form, we can say that it is teaching with participants who can be present either physically or digitally, and where everyone can communicate with the teacher. Currently, it will work best when the teacher is physically present.

Planning

It is important that you have thought carefully about how you want to carry out the teaching, so that you are as well prepared as possible. You may want to make it as easy as possible the first time. Talk to colleagues who have previous experience with hybrid teaching.

The most important thing is that you have tested your plan in advance and become familiar with the equipment, software and the room you will use.

Contact eilin-kontakt@sv.uio.no and we will help you get started.

The Technical

All auditoriums and teaching rooms at the faculty (SV) are set up ready to use Zoom from the PC installed in the room. Video and sound are the same for recording, i.e. a camera that covers a set area of the teacher's table/lectern and sound from the mounted webcam.

Application software

We use Zoom for remote teaching. Remember, students who are attending physically can also attend digitally via Zoom on their laptop (they must mute their speakers and microphone). Students attending digitally and those attending physically will be able to see each other and gain a sense of concord.

We use also Mentimeter, a combined presentation and student response system software application. Contact IT

Teaching

Think through how you will structure your teaching, and what you are comfortable with. Start off simply before you move on to more advanced methods.

  • How will you conduct a dialogue with students
  • Will conduct all of the the teaching live or could you use prerecorded elements
  • Plan for the same teaching experience for the students, whether they participate physically or digitally.
