Academic interests

Camilla Winde Gissel's research centers on radicalisation, disengagement and rehabilitation. Gissel employs cultural criminological theory and methodology to expound processes of meaning-making on micro, meta and macro level. 

She is currently working on the EU-funded Marie Sklodowska-Curie Doctoral Network VORTEX. The project has the overarching aim to develop new evidence-based innovative strategies to counter and prevent ideological and behavioural radicalization. Gissel's project work to identify the strengths and weaknesses of programs, policies and projects which aims to deradicalize, disengage and reintegrate (former) violent extremists and terrorists. 

Background

Camilla Winde Gissel is a PhD Research Fellow at Center for Research on Extremism. She holds a MSc degree in Cultural Criminology from Lund University, a MA degree in Cross-Cultural Studies from Copenhagen University and a BA degree from Aarhus University. Her latest thesis focuses on the narrative constructions of woman foreign fighters in the Danish media and political debate and how these constructions are used to argue against their repatriation from Kurdish controlled camps in Syria.
