Seminar in Fushun: Amber, Fushun, and fieldwork

“What is your impression on amber, Fushun amber, or Fushun and amber? What would you like to discuss in this seminar?”

With these opening questions, Yayi invited participants to think with her about amber and Fushun. She began by outlining some key aspects of the global economy of amber and how it has circulated across borders and cultures. Then, she shared her recent ethnographic experiences in Fushun, focusing on amber, local livelihoods, and the layered histories of Fushun.

The participants came from diverse professional backgrounds. While most had not worked directly with amber before, they were familiar with Fushun amber and had personal memory of it from growing up and living in Fushun. Their curiosity and engagement brought fresh perspectives to the discussion.
