Synthetic fertilizers have long boosted agricultural production, but at a high environmental cost—polluted waters, degraded soils, biodiversity loss, and 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Now, the fertilizer industry is turning to green hydrogen to produce "fossil-free" fertilizers. But does this truly drive the necessary food system transformation, or does it simply justify continued reliance on synthetic fertilizers with their harmful impacts? With African countries heavily dependent on fertilizer imports and new green hydrogen fertilizer plants emerging—including one in Uganda supported by NORAD and Norfund—this talk explores the risks, realities, and real alternatives. Join us for a critical discussion on the future of fertilizers and food security.
