About our guest

Iva van Halen-Peša is an Associate Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Groningen, studying environmental histories of resource extraction and environmentalism in Africa through her ERC-funded project, AFREXTRACT, that explores how people respond to environmental transformation, pollution, toxicity and degradation from mining and oil drilling in the Niger Delta, the Zambian Copperbelt and gold mining in Johannesburg through oral histories, archival research, participant observation, and literary analysis. Together with her AFREXTRACT team, Iva recently published the ‘Abundance Extracted: Living with Mining and Oil in Africa’ book featuring writing, poetry, oral histories, and photographs. This seminar is in collaboration with the MSCA HEALENAE project.
