SHINE Digitalization of Pre-operative Hypnosis for Women with Breast Cancer

Duration
01.08.2024–31.12.2027

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women, with nearly 4,000 surgeries performed annually in Norway. Many women experience stress, pain, and fatigue post-surgery, and one in three faces long-lasting issues that can lead to permanent disability benefits. Current treatments have limited success in preventing these challenges. Our project seeks to change this.

In an ongoing study funded by the Cancer Society, we have shown that treatment with hypnosis just before breast cancer surgery has several positive effects. Participants who received hypnosis reported a decreased need for pain relief medications and also reported less stress and fatigue after the operation. The results also suggest that hypnosis helped prevent long-term issues. The goal of the SHINE study is to optimize a digital version of the preoperative hypnosis that can be easily integrated into clinical practice and made available nationwide.
