About the project

The emotion of being moved is a fascinating emotion that seems to be present in all cultures and throughout history. Recently researchers began investigating this emotion more systematically and were able to discover some of its typical characteristics. We want to continue the research focus on this positive emotion, but now specifically have a closer look at it in a setting of a romantic relationship.

Goals

Romantic relationships are one of the essential foundations for the existence and functioning of our societies. Modern psychology has devoted a great deal of effort studying emotions like anger, joy, disgust, and shame in romantic relationships, and the results from scientific research have helped to better understand how these emotions might affect couples. Research on the emotion of being moved, however, is a relatively new research trend. The aim of this project is to explore when and how this emotion is evoked, and also what its potential functions and effects are in romantic relationships. By enriching current knowledge on this topic, individuals and couples may potentially benefit from the research and receive valuable tools for enhancing their own and their partner’s psychological wellbeing.

Financing

The project is not being financed by any external financial sources.

Cooperation

This project is a part of a doctoral thesis to be prepared at the Department of Psychology, University of Oslo, Norway and Institute of Psychology, Jagiellonian University, Poland, and is an international collaboration between the Kama muta lab and the Centre for Emotion and Motivation Psychology from each of the corresponding universities. The project is led by Jan Wiecha, M.A. and Anette Åbom, M.A. as part of their doctoral dissertation, under the supervision of professor Beate Seibt, University of Oslo.

Participation

Participation in this research project involves filling out an online survey that will take around 20 minutes to complete. The survey can be completed both on mobile devices and computers. For comfort reasons, we recommend using computers.

The emotion of being moved can vary in frequency, sensations, and intensity, and we are interested in all sorts of experiences of it. In other words, participants in this research project do not need to have experienced a strong emotion of being moved or to have felt the emotion often in their romantic relationship.
