Autism is characterised by qualitative differences in behavior compared to non-autistic individuals. While these differences can be a strength for many autistic people, for some, these differences they can present challenges across various domains. One such domain is higher education. Autistic students in higher education can face a range of challenges that can impact their studies and participation. These challenges include, but are not limited to, sensory sensitivities, communication difficulties, heightened anxiety, and difficulties with participation.
Effective accommodations can help autistic students thrive, but the extent of accomodation needs for autistic students in Norwegian higher education students is not fully understood. In collaboration with the Department of Special Needs Education at the University of Oslo, our study is collecting data on what types of accommodation in higher education autistic students received or wish for, and their experiences with this accommodation and student life in general, both socially and academically. The study also collects data from non-autistic students with or without needs for any accommodations, allowing for a better understanding of accommodation needs that may be unique to autistic individuals, as well as the state of accessibility for a wide range of students in Norwegian universities and colleges.
Everyone who is currently studying or has started or completed their higher education studies in Norway after 2010, is welcome to participate in the study. We are hoping to collect data from as many current and former students as possible. The survey is in Norwegian.
