Art, Trauma, & Healing: The Role of Art and Creative Expression in the Palestinian Mental Health Landscape

In the context of complex trauma and war, art transcends aesthetic expression; it becomes a language of survival and reconstruction. When words often fail or are forbidden, art becomes a witness. It allows expression of what is unspeakable.

This panel discussion will focus on the intersection of art, trauma, and mental health, with a special emphasis on Palestine and Palestinian children. We aim to explore the role of art therapy and creative expression in addressing trauma caused by war, violence, and occupation in Palestine, while at the same time platforming artists and experts in the field to express their ideas and experiences.

This 2-hour hybrid panel discussion will focus on how different forms of art, such as painting, poetry, filmmaking, and general art-based psychosocial support can serve as therapeutic tools in the context of ongoing violence and trauma. Drawing on real experiences from Palestine (for some panelists this may be first-hand experience), the panelists will share insights into how creative practices foster healing for children, adults, and even practitioners themselves. This discussion will hopefully continue to bring light to Palestinian experiences and contribute to the reclamation of dignity, identity, and furthered solidarity with the Palestinian community across the globe.

We also aim to reflect on how art-based healing practices can be integrated into psychosocial support work in both ongoing and post-conflict contexts, strengthening and promoting the well-being resilience among war-affected Palestinians as well as set an example for war-affected populations in the world.

Panelists include:

  • Rami Khader, MHPSS expert, founder and executive director of Anar, a non-profit located in Bethlehem, Palestine.
  • Mai Shaer, visual artist and researcher.
  • Rasmi Damo, artist and cultural practitioner, and filmmaker.
  • Ibrahim Nassir, poet and cultural activist, and owner of NASSER, a Palestinian store in Oslo.
  • Stefanie Reinhart, visual artist and “artivist”.

Our colleague Nora Sveaass of Mental Health and Human Rights Info will be moderating the panel.

The panel will last 2 hours with a 10-15 minute break. Each panelist will introduce themselves and their work, followed by a discussion and Q&A.

The panel will be hybrid, hosted in person in Forsamlingssalen, on the 2nd Floor of the Psychology Department at UiO (Harald Schjelderups hus). A light snack and coffee will be provided.
