Academic interests
Kaja Sparre Bakke's research centers on attitudes and reactions to democratic backsliding and autocratization. This includes investigating citizens' and political elites' commitments to democracy, how democracy is conceptualized, and when citizens are willing to engage in protest activities to defend democracy. Ongoing projects look at how different political regimes enable or restrict civil resistance to autocratization, citizens' attitudes and commitments to the right to protest, and when political elites in democracies function as democratic gate-keepers.
Methods include various forms of regression analysis, panel matching, quasi-experimental methods and survey experiments
