Grade Appeals Process PECOS4096 - Master's Thesis

Submitting an Appeal

You submit the appeal in Studentweb within three weeks after the grade was announced (i.e., published in Studentweb).

It is not possible to request a written explanation for the grade as you receive an oral explanation immediately after the oral exam (Universities and Colleges Act (2024) § 11-8).

You will normally receive an answer within one month. If the process takes longer, you will be notified.

The result of the appeal assessment will be the final grade and may be the same, higher, or lower than the original grade.

Appeals Process

The Department of Political Science appoints a new appeals commission consisting of two examiners, of which at least one is external. They reassess the master's thesis independently, with access only to the thesis and assessment guidelines, not to the original grade or oral explanations.

If the new grade differs from the original by two or more grade, there will be an additional assessment before the final grade is set. In this process, examiners from both the original and appeals commission participate and agree on a grade.

During the appeal process, your grade is restricted in Studentweb and does not appear on transcripts. You may withdraw your appeal at any time until the case is settled. If withdrawn, the original result remains.

Outcome

If the appeals commission upholds the original grade, the result stands and there will be no new oral exam. If the appeals commission assigns a different grade, there will be arranged a new oral examination.

New Oral Examination

Before the oral exam you will be notified of the grade the appeals commission has assign your master's thesis. The appeals commission will not have assess to the original results. You will be invited to the new oral examination via Outlook.
