Amount Limit
Max. NOK 10,000 per student. Usually, a total pool of NOK 50,000 is divided equally among the applicants who meet the criteria. Applicants should therefore expect to receive less than the maximum amount. The grant is often between NOK 3,000 and NOK 5,000 per student, but this may vary from year to year. This means that most of the costs related to fieldwork will have to be covered in other ways.
What can the funds cover, and what is not covered?
The funds can cover accommodation, transport (train, plane, bus, boat), as well as visas and vaccinations.
Please note that you must choose the cheapest transport and accommodation options available.
The funds do not cover travel insurance or equipment (e.g. software, audio recorder, mobile phone, adapter, clothes).
What should the application contain?
You must submit three documents:
1) A project description of a maximum of 3 pages. The project description must include:
- Research question: The research question must be well-grounded in existing theory and literature in the field.
- An account of the research design and method, as well as the operationalization of key variables where relevant.
- What data or source material the master's thesis will be based on.
- Information about the fieldwork:
- A description of how the fieldwork will supplement existing written sources.
- A description of who you plan to interview during the fieldwork and how you plan to get in touch with them.
- State when you have been or will be doing fieldwork. Approximate dates are sufficient.
- A description of how you plan to solve any language problems in connection with the fieldwork.
- State how you will store and process the research data you collect.
- State which country and area you wish to conduct fieldwork in. We do not provide support for fieldwork if you are travelling to a country or area that is subject to a travel advisory from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD).
2) A brief statement/confirmation from your supervisor that fieldwork is a necessary part of the project.
3) A budget for the fieldwork.

Note! Incomplete applications will not be processed.
When will you receive a reply?
The processing time is three weeks from the application deadline. Payment is usually made in January.
It is not necessary to submit receipts or other documentation after the fieldwork. However, the department has the right to request documentation if there is a suspicion that the arrangement has been misused.
