Background
Mathias is pursuing a master's degree in Political Science at the University of Oslo, where he is writing his thesis on under which conditions national institutions affect the transition to clean energy. Decarbonization and growth in use of renewables is an outspoken goal in the EU Green Deal, and Mathias want to use his thesis to investigate if variation in national institutions can accelerate or slow down the transition.
His supervisors are Jens Bertil Johansen Koning (ISV), Jarle Trondal (ARENA), and Merethe D. Leiren (ARENA). Mathias is the recipient of the ARENA student scholarship for 2026/2027.
Prior to his master's studies, Mathias completed a bachelor's degree in Political Science at UiO, specializing in European Studies. His bachelor's thesis focused on the access Norwegian interest groups have to lobbying in Brussels.
Mathias also holds a part-time position at SV-info until the end of November and previously worked as a student assistant at the Department of Psychology, where he assisted with the time-tracking of mandatory work hours in AURA.
Academic interests
Mathias is particularly interested in regimes and institutions, and in whether, when, or how they produce different outcomes. He is also interested in the EU, integration theory, and lobbying.
In the field of methodology, Mathias is interested in when and how we can make causal conclusions from observational studies.
