The effects of psychotherapy for men perpetrating violence toward their female partners have been found to be modest or equivocal; therefore, further research is necessary to determine how therapists can intervene to help clients stop acting violently. To obtain a better understanding of successful therapist strategies in a particular case, we conducted an interpretive phenomenological analysis of interactional patterns and change processes during therapy sessions in four carefully selected cases - two cases in which the use of violence ended after the completion of therapy (violence ended) were compared with two cases in which the client completed therapy but continued to act violently (violence continued). The client’s use of violence was addressed repeatedly in all four cases, but the scripting of such events varied between the two case types. I) Violence ended: Joint explorations of the script of “the annoying other” led to therapist strategies that fostered new experiences of the states of mind of the client and partner. This seemed to help clients develop more caring and safer ways of relating to their partner. II) Violence continued: Engagement in the script of “hopeless me” was associated with therapist strategies that relied more on explanations of the client’s vulnerability to acting violently. This seemed to hinder deeper comprehension of the clients’ use of violence and the needs and intentions of their partners. Contrary to expectations, engagement in the script of “the annoying other” facilitated exploration of emotional states in both the client and his significant other. We present some empirically derived principles for moment-to-moment therapist strategies that facilitated in-session change with men acting violently toward their partner.

This study examines client utterances that can be understood as ambivalent in violence-focused therapy. The purpose is to enrich our scientific understanding of client contributions to therapy when they appear ambivalent to the therapeutic project and develop clinically relevant perspectives that enable us to help this and other client groups. Using constructivist grounded theory analysis of five completed therapies, we describe three categories of client ambivalence present throughout all five therapies: I am bad, but I am not that bad; I have tried and tried in vain; and I know it is wrong, but I have to, I have no choice. The categories are described and understood from a clinical perspective. They are developed on the basis of an interpretation of what seems to be at stake for the client in the here-and-now of therapy. Clinical implications are discussed.

Systematic analyses of initiatives and responses from mediators working with parents in intense conflicts about child custody and care brought forward variations in effective strategies. The findings are presented along six dimensions: The topics that were addressed, how the agenda for the sessions was decided, focus on agreement vs relational topics, oral vs written orientation, limited vs generous time, and parental vs system focus. Effective mediators handled these dimensions with flexibility, recognized and validated both parents' perspectives, accepted and explored differences, differentiated topics, focused on relational issues when needed, tracked the process by written summaries, and encouraged testing solutions.

A significant proportion of parents in mediation present destructive and escalating conflicts. In a naturalistic study of sessions with high‐conflict couples, we observed dialogues with frequent interruptions, rapidly shifting subjects, and emotional attacks. A systematic search revealed eight distinct sources of conflict that interfered with the mediation process: Two related to the breakup, four regarding differing concerns of care for the child, and two mainly about the contextual conditions for childcare arrangements. The article describes these sources of conflicts in a format that could increase the capacity of mediators to recognize and address them during the process of mediation.

From the 1990s, the position of family therapy has been challenged by a culture inclined to define psychological problems as individual illnesses connected to specific diagnostic labels. Furthermore, a narrow definition of research, often called the gold standard designs, has influenced the psychotherapy field. To advocate a systemic perspective, we need clinical research with a broader scope. This article argues for systemic research that is designed closer to the clinical situation. Besides information about the context, there are three important sources of information about the process and outcome of clinical practice: Systematic and regular feedback from clients and therapists about the process and outcome, direct observations from therapy sessions, and reports about clients’ long-term development. If used alone, each of these gateways to knowledge may be very misleading. However, if used together they can help us to refine and develop the collaboration with families and couples. Furthermore, this approach can help us to improve our ability to communicate more meaningfully about the ideas for, and the outcome of, systemic interventions.

for å hente frem flere nyanser i historiene.

The article presents findings from a qualitative oriented mediation
project conducted in Oslo, Norway. The mediators integrate knowledge
from the mediation tradition and the family therapy tradition. A
qualitative research-design was chosen. Information about the mediation
and the cooperation between parents are based on interviews with
clients and mediators, and on observations from every
mediation-session. The discussion of the results focus on what can
contribute to a successful mediation-process. Six overriding elements
are pointed out: (1) to create conditions for conversations were each
part can speak and be heard, (2) a readiness to confirm the reactions
of each part, (3) to provide opportunities to rewrite parts of the
separation history, (4) to ask questions relevant to the very special
situation of each family, (5) to base solutions on parents own
competence, and (6) to help parents put their decisions down on paper.

The article presents strategies in mediation based upon experiences from a mediation project conducted in Oslo, Norway. The mediators integrate knowledge from the mediation tradition and the family therapy tradition. The article describes several motivating, structuring, confirming and meaning-expanding strategies in the sessions, and how clients are helped to reach decisions. The mediation is structured. At the same time the mediators try to give emotional reactions a legitimate place. In the style they are more like conversational partners than advisors, and solutions are based on the parents own ideas and competence.

sosiale problemer. Her drøftes tema som alle institusjonsarbeidere

The workshop is based on experiences from a research project at the
University of Oslo on therapy with families where child sexual abuse is
suspected. One of the aims is to develop and evaluate a model for how
to help the child and the other family members in this situation. The
project is supported by the Norwegian Council of Research and other
institutions. A guiding principle for the project is that control is
subordinated openness, co-operation and conversation. The family
members are regarded as central agents in their own lives and one
ambition is to develop concrete guidelines, based on this principle,
for the helping professions. Knowledge about how each family member,
especially the child, perceive the situation is used as important
feedback in the therapeutic process. In many of the cases there are a
close co-operation with the child protective service. Decisions about
how to work and whom to involve are taken in co-operation with the
help-seeking person. The family members are met individually and
together. Information from each session is systematically recorded. In
this workshop we will present the guiding principles in meeting
families concerned about sexual abuse within the family and the
experiences from the project so far. A short summary of these
guidelines can be expressed in the following way: «A crises
perspective», «a systemic perspective», «a therapeutic position»,
«decisions in the hands of the family», «openness with consent»,
«sharing information», «protection» and «flexibility». Video
illustrations will be used to exemplify the therapeutic methods.

At the University of Oslo five psychologists are working together as a
research and therapy team with families concerned with the question of
child sexual abuse. One of the aims with the project is to develop and
evaluate a model for how to help the child and the other family members
in cases where child sexual abuse is suspected. The clinical part of
the project started in February 1998 and will last for three years. The
project is supported by the Norwegian Council of Research; Ministry of
Children and Families; Institute of Psychology, University of Oslo;
Norwegian Social Research. A guiding principle for the project is that

with the mother, the child, and the suspected father, individually

recorded: Descriptions given by the client concerning sexual abuse,
relationships within the family, dialogues within the family, how the
family-members organize their daily life, interventions from the
therapist and the team. The ways of meeting the clients are
systematically evaluated by the family members.

The members of the project form a research and therapy team. The aim is to develop and evaluate a model for how to help the child and the other family members in cases where child sexual abuse is suspected. Guiding principles in meeting families with concern about child sexual abuse; what are the best interests of the child?
Fulltekst i vitenarkiv
Vis sammendrag
The first part of the work-shop adressed questions conserning the best interests of the child, when there is a suspicion of sexual abuse from someone in the family. The following views were descibed and dicussed:
* The way child abuse cases are organised and implemented in the helping systems tend to neglect the interests of the child.
* The child¿s main objective may not be to prosecute the perpetrator. They want the abuse to stop. It is important that they are given the opportunity to tell their story and have it psychologically confirmed.
* The offender is often active in the process of keeping the abuse a secret. This secrecy tends to obscure each family members¿ experience of events and shapes their perceptions of each other.
* The fact that the abuse has to be kept secret also effects other areas of conversation. Like rings in the water the areas that are not open for conversation get larger and larger.
* In an atmosphere of secrecy, the caretaker does not have access to the child¿s experiences. Thus it is impossible to verify the child¿s¿ feelings and thoughts about the events.
* The cases have to be organised in a way that opens the dialogue between the child, the non-abusive.
The second part of the work shop presented and discussed guiding principles in meeting families concerned about child sexual abuse:
«A crises perspective». Expecting that the concern about abuse brings each member of the family into a serious crises in life, whether the child has been abused or not.
«A systemic perspective». Each member of the family is seen as part of a system of mutual dependency and loyalty, with an inclination to protect each other.
«A therapeutic position». Attaining a collaborative relation through:
a) ensuring that at least one or more members of the family has given, or has been helped to give, the assignment to the therapist
b) exploring and understanding the different versions of reality that are conveyed about the concern of abuse
«Decisions in the hands of the family». The family-members take the final decisions about whom to invite to the sessions at which time. The therapists explore and challenge the possible consequences of the various proposals that are discussed.
«Openness with consent». Upon request, a willingness to inform child protective services and police, but never without informing and discussing this with the family.
«Sharing information». Helping the members of the family to share their thoughts and reflections concerning one or more of the following questions:
a) events leading to concern
b) how to handle the concern of possible abuse
c) how to relate to each other in the near and more distant future
d) how to relate to helping-systems and control-systems outside the family
«Protection». A focus on what the family-members can do in order to reduce any doubt and suspicion about abuse in the future.
«Flexibility». A preparedness to:
a) take seriously what ever topic the family brings into the sessions
b) accept ambiguity
c) change the rate of sessions
d) offer individual-, couple- and family-sessions in the same case
e) accept solutions that not necessary are perfect

The article gives a short description of the key ideas that have been
introduced during the development of family therapy and systemic
thinking. Several of these ideas might be considered contradictory. The
authors adress three areas that have been subject to many discussions
among family therapists: An expert versus non-expert position, the
question of influencing versus a co-creating and the question of
directing the focus towards behavior versus meaning. Referring to
theory and therapeutic experience the authors argues for a perspective
that include both positions.
