  Background Parental drinking, mental health and family socioeconomic status are all associated with offspring sleep problems, but there is a paucity of research that considers the effect of risk factors, as they co-occur within and across families. Also, sleep problems are closely linked with mental health problems. Disentangling the effects on one or the other are important. We examined whether parental risk constellations are differently associated with offspring’s subsequent prescription drug use for sleep problems during nine years with or without prescription drug use for anxiety and/or depression. Methods The sample included 8773 adolescent offspring of 6696 two-parent families who participated in the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study in Norway. The exposures were five parental risk constellations, previously identified via Latent Profile Analysis, characterized by drinking frequencies and quantities, mental health, and years of education. The outcomes were dispensed prescription drugs in offspring during 2008–2016 for (a) only sleep problems (b) sleep problems and anxiety/depression or (c) only anxiety/depression. We used multinomial logistic regression to model the odds of the outcomes. Results Compared to the overall low-risk parental constellation, none of the risky constellations were significantly associated with increased risk of being dispensed prescription drugs only for sleep problems. Offspring from two different risk profiles were at increased risk for being dispensed both sleep and anxiety/depression prescription drugs. These were parental profiles marked by (1) low education, symptoms of mental health problems and weekly binge drinking in both parents (OR 1.90, CI=1.06;3.42); and (2) frequent heavy drinking in both parents and symptoms of mental health problems in fathers (OR 3.32, CI=1.49;7.39). Offspring from the risk profile with lowest parental education had increased risk of only anxiety/depression prescription drugs (OR 1.25, CI=1.05;1.49). Conclusion Our findings suggest that parental risk constellations are not associated with increased risk of offspring receiving sleep medications without also receiving anxiety/depression medications, as two risk constellations were associated with increased risk of dispensation of both sleep and anxiety/depression prescription drugs. Receiving both may be an indication of severity. The findings underscore the importance of including measures of mental health problems when investigating sleep problems to avoid misattribution of effects

  Background We examine whether associations between prenatal exposure to hazardous maternal alcohol consumption during the first trimester of pregnancy and sleep problems in young children represent a causal association. Methods The population-based sample consists of 15,911 mothers with 30,395 offspring from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and Child Cohort Study (MoBa) and the Medical Birth Registry of Norway (MBRN). Women self-reported pre-pregnancy alcohol consumption and consumption during the first trimester of pregnancy twice: at gestational weeks 17 and 30. Mothers reported their children's sleep problems, when they were 1.5 and 3 years (mean = 50; SD = 10). We tested models adjusting for (1) measured confounders, (2) unmeasured familial risk factors by sibling design, and (3) maternal hazardous drinking in the 3 months prior to pregnancy as an instrumental variable within the sibling design. Results Children of mothers with hazardous drinking during the first trimester were at increased risk of sleep problems at 1.5 (β = 1.14, 95%CI 0.04–2.25) and 3 (β = 2.86, 95%CI 1.85–3.87) years of age. These associations were reduced to close to zero and non-significant at 1.5 (β = −0.32, 95%CI −1.91–1.26) and 3 (β = 0.06, 95%CI −1.56–1.64) years when controlling for both familial and measured environmental risk factors. Conclusions There is a moderate association between maternal hazardous drinking during pregnancy and offspring sleep problems up to age three. This association is explained by risk factors differing between families and does not reflect a cause-effect relationship.

  The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated restrictions may have affected children and adolescent's mental health adversely. We cast light on this question using primary and specialist consultations data for the entire population of children of age 6-19 years in Norway (N = 908 272). Our outcomes are the monthly likelihood of having a consultation or hospitalization related to mental health problems and common mental health diagnoses. We compared a pandemic (2019-2021) to a pre-pandemic (2017-2019) cohort using event study and difference-in-difference designs that separate the shock of the pandemic from linear period trends and seasonal variation. We found temporary reductions in all mental health consultations during lockdown in spring 2020. In fall 2020 and winter 2021, consultation volumes in primary care increased, stabilizing at a higher level in 2021. Consultations in specialist care increased from spring 2021. Our findings could suggest a worsening of mental health among adolescents.

  Aims: Certain risk constellations of parental drinking, mental health and years of education are prospectively associated with offspring’s risk for a diagnosis of anxiety/depression, but it remains unknown how they may relate to other aspects of offspring’s mental health. We examined whether such risk constellations were also prospectively associated with the extent of offspring’s utilisation of healthcare services for anxiety/depression. Methods: The sample included 8773 adolescent offspring of 6696 two-parent families who participated in the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study in Norway. The exposures consisted of five parental risk constellations characterised by drinking frequencies and quantities, years of education and mental health previously derived based on the parental self-reports using latent profile analysis. The outcomes were the number of years in contact, and the total number of consultations/visits, with healthcare services for anxiety/depression in adolescents and young adults as recorded in healthcare registries in the period 2008–2014. Associations were examined using zero-inflated negative binomial regression models, accounting for demographics and offspring’s early mental health. Results: Parental risk constellations were not significantly associated with the extent of offspring’s healthcare utilisation for anxiety/depression during the seven-year study period, neither in respect of number of years nor in number of contacts. Conclusions: Offspring of four risky constellations were no more likely to use healthcare services for longer time periods or have more consultations/visits than offspring of the lowest-risk constellation. Parental risk constellations appear more informative for understanding disorder aetiology than for understanding management and treatment of anxiety and depression during adolescence and early adulthood.

  Aim: We aimed to describe opioid maintenance treatment (OMT) to pregnant women in Norway and study the background characteristics of the pregnant women compared to the general population of pregnant women and to a previous clinical cohort study of OMT in pregnancy. Methods: Population-based cohort study with linked data from the Norwegian Medical Birth Registry, the Norwegian Prescription Database, the Norwegian Patient Registry, and Statistics Norway. The study population consisted of women giving birth between 2005-2015 in Norway. We defined OMT pregnancies as pregnancies where the woman was dispensed OMT medications (methadone, buprenorphine, or buprenorphine/ naloxone) at least once during pregnancy. Results: The study population consisted of 420,808 women with 645,440 pregnancies ending in a live birth in Norway in 2005-2015 (the general pregnant population). Of these, 261 women (0.6‰) had altogether 306 OMT pregnancies. The mean number of pregnancies was 28 OMT pregnancies per year and quite stable during the study period. Women with OMT pregnancies were older, smoked tobacco more frequently, had lower education, and fewer of them had a partner, compared to the general population of pregnant women. In most pregnancies, the women were treated with buprenorphine (n=183 (59.8%)), while in 120 (39.2%) pregnancies, the woman received methadone. From 2008, buprenorphine replaced methadone as the most frequently used drug. In only 38 (12.4%) pregnancies, OMT treatment was initiated in pregnancy. In 201 (66%) pregnancies, the woman used OMT medications in all trimesters. For these women, the mean amount of dispensed drug was 3.4 DDD/day (85 mg/day) in pregnancy for methadone and 1.9 DDD/day (15.2 mg/day) for buprenorphine. Conclusion: The number of OMT pregnancies per year has been low and stable in the period 2005-2015. Following Norwegian recommendations, there has been a shift from treatment with methadone towards buprenorphine. The women receiving OMT during pregnancy had more risk factors for adverse outcomes than the general pregnant population but were quite similar to the previous clinical cohort.

  Abstract Objective: We examined the risk of developing a future alcohol use disorder (AUD) among offspring of families with different constellations of parental risk factors. Method: We analyzed a sample of 8,774 offspring (50.2% male) from 6,696 two-parent families who participated in the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study in Norway when offspring were 13–19 years old in 1995–1997 or 2006–2008. Based on population registry information and parental Nord-Trøndelag Health Study self-reports, families were classified via Latent Profile Analysis into fiver risk constellations reflecting parents’ education, drinking quantities and frequencies, and mental health. Information about AUD-related diagnoses, treatments, and prescriptions for all offspring in the period between 2008 and 2016 was obtained from 3 national health registries and pooled to reflect any AUD. The likelihood of AUD in offspring was examined with a set of nested logistic regression models. Results: Registry records yielded 186 AUD cases (2.1%). Compared with the lowest-risk constellation, offspring from two constellations were more likely to present with AUD in unadjusted analyses. After adjusting for all covariates, including offspring’s alcohol consumption and witnessing parental intoxication during adolescence, AUD risk remained elevated and statistically significant (adjusted odds ratio = 2.34, 95% confidence interval = 1.14, 4.85) for offspring from the constellation characterized by at least weekly binge drinking, low education, and poor mental health in both parents. Conclusion: Weekly binge drinking by both parents was associated with future AUD risk among community offspring in Norway when clustered with additional parental risks such as poor mental health and low educational attainment.

  Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is a global public health emergency and experts emphasize the need for rapid and a high degree of communication and interaction between all parties, in order for critical research to be implemented. We introduce a resource (website) that provides bibliometric analysis showing the current content and structure of the published literature. As new research is published daily, the analysis is regularly updated to show the status as the research field develops and matures. Methods: Two bibliometric methods were employed, the first is a keyword co-occurrence analysis, based on published work available from PubMed. The second is a bibliometric coupling analysis, based on articles available through Scopus. The results are presented as clustered network graphs; available as interactive network graphs through the webpage. Results: For research as of March 23rd, keyword co-occurrence analysis showed that research was organized in 4 topic clusters: "Health and pandemic management", "The disease and its pathophysiology", "Clinical epidemiology of the disease" and "Treatment of the disease". Coupling analyses resulted in 4 clusters on literature that relates to "Overview of the new virus", "Clinical medicine", "On the virus" and "Reproduction rate and spread". Conclusion: We introduced a dynamic resource that will give a wide readership an overview of how the structure of the COVID-19 literature is developing. To illustrate what this can look like, we showed the structure as it stands three months after the virus was identified; the structure is likely to change as we progress to later stages of this pandemic.   Background Research on parental mental illness is often carried out in disorder specific research silos. Drawing on the different research areas, it is possible to leverage and combine existing knowledge, and identify insights that can be transferred across research areas. In this study, we identify the overarching structure of research on parents with psychiatric disorders, and the structure of the different research areas, as defined by psychiatric disorder groups in ICD-10, and identify both topics that are commonly examined, and topics that received attention in only a few of the research areas. Methods We use bibliometric science mapping to examine keywords in 16,734 articles, showing the overarching structure of research on parents with mental illness, both overall and within ICD-10 psychiatric disorder categories. The search was conducted using the Scopus database for journal articles published between 1999 and 2018, with no restrictions on language. Results Co-occurrence analysis of the keywords in the 16,734 articles on parental mental illnesses in different psychiatric disorder categories, indicate there are six general themes in the literature: ‘expectant mothers and early motherhood’, ‘substance use and abuse’, ‘Socio-economic status’ (SES) and support practices’, ‘biomedical research‘, ‘diagnoses, symptoms and treatment’, and ‘child–parent interaction and context’. Although the same themes are covered in different areas, the contexts, in terms of content and relation to other topics, vary between the research areas. Some topics are heavily researched in some areas, but seem to be neglected in others. Conclusions This study provides data both in interactive maps and an extensive table, allowing readers to dive deep into their topic of interest, and examine how this connects to other topics, which may in turn guide identification of important gaps in the literature, and ultimately inspire and generate novel research avenues.

  This article is based on a study that investigated social cognitive psychological factors associated with economic thresholds related to using public or other sustainable transport modes. A survey was conducted using a random sample of the Norwegian population living in the six largest urban regions (n = 1039). The respondents were asked to indicate the monthly increase in car taxes and fees that they would perceive necessary to make them use sustainable transport modes instead of their private car. The findings revealed that those who perceived themselves as definitive car users (strongly reluctant to change transport mode) reported low tolerance of push measures, low awareness of and ascription of responsibility for the consequences of car use, and weak environmental norms. Environmental norms, attitudes towards transport and push measure tolerance were the strongest predictors of the respondents belonging to either the lowest or the highest threshold groups. The authors conclude that measures aimed at increasing the costs of car use and improving the accessibility of public transport in urban areas could be supplemented by social cognitive factors.

  Background While it is well documented that many experience harm from others’ substance use, little is known about the psychological strain associated with others’ use. The aims were: (1) to describe the prevalence of worries about others’ alcohol, cigarette and illegal drug use, (2) whose substance use people worry about, (3) the overlap in worries, and (4) to examine how worries about others’ use of each substance vary according to demographics, own substance use and experience of harm from others’ use. Methods A population survey was conducted among 16–64 year old Norwegians (N = 1667). Respondents’ reported on worries about others’ alcohol, cigarette and illegal drug use, measures of experiences of harm from others’ use of the three substances, and own substance use. Results Worries about others’ drinking were most prevalent. Among those who worried, others’ cigarette and illegal drug use caused more frequent worry. While worry about cigarette use was mostly associated with family members’ use, worry about others’ alcohol and illegal drug use more often concerned friends’/acquaintances’ use. About half worried about others’ use of at least one substance. Across all three substances, experience of harm from others’ substance use was most strongly related to worries. Conclusion Worries about others’ substance use are common and reflect the prevalence of use of the substances in the population. In sum, the findings suggest that worry about others’ alcohol and illegal drug use is primarily related to acute harm while worry about others’ cigarette smoking is more related to chronic harm.

  Urban populations transport risk perception is interesting because it is associated with travel mode choices and use. This study investigates changes in transport-related risk constructs in the urban population in Norway in 2004 and 2013, and describes whether people perceive private or public to be associated with the highest risk. The results are based on self-completion questionnaire surveys conducted in two independent representative samples living in the same urban areas in 2004 (n = 592) and 2013 (n = 1035). Overall, the respondents perceived the risk as lower in 2013 than in 2004. For both time periods, people consistently assessed the risk constructs related to private motorized transportation as higher than corresponding risk in public transportation. The findings suggest that while transportation risk perception in urban populations may change over time, the pattern that private motorized transportation is associated with a higher perceived risk than public transportation remains stable.

  While both policy makers and researchers have shown renewed interest in drinking and harm to others, several questions concerning the issue remain unanswered. The aim of this study was to address some of these questions by: (i) presenting updated figures on the prevalence of experienced harm from other people's drinking in various sub-groups; and (ii) examining in which locations such episodes most often occur and who the perpetrators usually are. Data were obtained from a general population survey among 16- to 79-year-old Norwegians (n = 1947), where experiences of five negative consequences related to other people's drinking (e.g. physical abuse and verbal abuse) were assessed. Those who reported such experiences were asked to specify at which location the last episode occurred and who the perpetrator was. Altogether, 17.3% had experienced one or more problems during the past 12 months. Persons who were young, not living with a partner, an urban resident, with low education and often intoxicated were at increased risk. The direction of statistically significant gender differences depended on the type of problem. While the episodes were spread across different locations (private homes, on-premise outlets and outdoors), perpetrators were more often strangers or friends/acquaintances than partners or family members. In a preventive perspective, increased knowledge regarding the context of episodes where people experience harm from other people's drinking is important. We have shed some light on this issue by examining the locations and perpetrators of such episodes.

  Effective alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug policies reduce the harm to users and third parties. Knowledge about determinants and interrelations between attitudes held by the general public to different types of policy measures can benefit policy-makers who aim to increase acceptance for effective policy. The present study describes the level of support for various policy measures held by the general public, and investigates the association between attitudes to policy measures on alcohol, tobacco and illegal drug. A sample of the Norwegian general population aged 16–64 (N = 1803) was interviewed by telephone. Respondents reported demographic information, personal substance use and attitudes to various policy measures. Associations between attitudes were assessed with correlation and regression analysis. Associations between attitudes were strongest for similar policy measures across substance groups (e.g. tax increases on alcohol and tobacco). There was a weaker association between attitudes to different policy measures aimed at the same substance (e.g. tax increase on alcohol and campaigns on alcohol). The degree to which people approve or disapprove of the use of particular types of policy measures is irrespective of the targeted substance.

  This study addresses how experienced harm from other people's drinking varies between six Northern European countries by comparing 1) the prevalence of experienced harm and 2) the correlates of harm. The data comprise 18–69-year olds who participated in general population surveys in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Scotland during the period 2008–2013. Comparative data were available on five types of harm: physical abuse, damage of clothes/belongings, verbal abuse, being afraid, and being kept awake at night. This study shows that harms from other's drinking are commonly experienced in all six countries. Being kept awake at night is the most common harm, while being physically harmed is the least common. The proportions that reported at least one of the five problems were highest in Finland and Iceland and lowest in Norway, but also relatively low in Sweden. Across countries, the level of harm was highest among young, single, urban residents, and for some countries among women and those who frequently drank to intoxication themselves. The study revealed large differences in the prevalence of harm in countries with fairly similar drinking cultures. However, the correlates of such experiences were similar across countries. Possible explanations of the findings are discussed, including differences in study design.

  Although many studies have addressed adverse outcomes in children of parents with alcohol abuse/dependence, less is known about the possible long-term effects of more normative patterns of parental alcohol consumption, including drinking at lower risk levels and heavy episodic or binge drinking. The extent of harm from parental drinking may therefore be underestimated. With this research proposal, we describe a project that aims to assess possible long-term adverse effects of parental drinking by combining survey and nationwide registry data. Advantages of a longitudinal general population cohort design include that it allows for detailed information on parental drinking through survey data and identification of possible negative long-term health and social outcomes from exposure to parental drinking 1–19 years after exposure through continuously updated nationwide registers. The rich information available from combining survey and registry data allows us to take into account important confounders, mediators, and moderators.

  This article considers the potential in using nationwide registers to study harm to others from substance use and abuse. The advantages of using registry data include the opportunity to include the data on the entire population nationwide and continuously updated longitudinal datasets; they allow for studying small subpopulations and have little missing data. Personal identification numbers and family numbers enable linkage of data from different registers. Such datasets can include extensive information on individual and family levels. In this article, we provide an introduction to nationwide registers and explain how they can be applied to investigate two types of third-party harms: harm to children and harm to partners/spouses from substance use and abuse in parents and partners/spouses. Finally, we discuss challenges, benefits, and ethical considerations regarding the use of such data.

  This study aims to investigate psychological factors related to mode use on urban work/education and leisure travels, and to examine such factors related to intentions of using public transport. A survey was conducted in a random representative sample of the Norwegian population living in urban regions recruited from the Norwegian population registry (n = 1039). A two-cluster solution for mode use was revealed: individuals who mainly used public or health-promoting transport, and individuals who primarily used a car on the respective travels. The results suggest that car habit strength is more strongly related to car use on work/education travels. The probability component of risk perception was related to mode use on leisure travels, and there was a weak association between the consequence component and use. High perceived probability of accidents in public transport was associated with use of public transport, while high corresponding risk estimates in private motorized transport were associated with car use. Strong car habit strength and high perceived probabilities of accidents and security issues in public transport were related to a reduced intention of using public transport. Increased worry of private motorized transport and a high demand for risk mitigation related to public modes were associated with an increased intention to use public transport. Work/education travels could be more habitual than leisure travels. Risk perception may be a result of exposure to specific modes, rather than a predictor of mode use. Safety and security factors also appeared as more relevant for leisure travels than for work/education travels.

  It is still under debate whether the reported effects of opioid maintenance therapy (OMT) on child behaviour are a direct effect of prenatal exposure, or whether other factors are involved. This prospective cohort study investigated three models: the teratogenic risk model, the maternal risk model, and a combined risk model in a group of 35 children (M = 52.20 months, SD = 1.69) prenatally exposed to OMT. Results revealed support for the maternal risk model and the combined model, with the combined model predicting child internalising and externalising behaviour problems the best (R2 = .65, p = .008 and R2 = .74, p = .003, respectively). Findings suggest that behaviour problems in children of women in OMT may not be a direct exposure effect. This underscores the importance of taking into consideration multiple factors when studying the effects of prenatal OMT exposure on child behaviour.

  Studien undersøker sammenhengen mellom rusmiddelbruk hos overgripere og partnervold, rapportert av kvinner på krisesentre i Norge. Resultatene viser store forskjeller mellom ulike kvinnegrupper. Undersøkelsen avdekker at nærmere 60 prosent av de norskættede kvinnene kom til krisesenter etter at de var blitt utsatt for vold begått av en partner i rus. Blant innvandrerkvinnene var det bare 26 prosent av kvinnene som oppga at partneren hadde vært ruset. Til gjengjeld var andelen som svarte «vet ikke» mye høyere hos innvandrerkvinnene: Nesten 50 prosent oppga at de var usikre på om partneren var ruset da angrepet skjedde. Innvandrerkvinnene er overrepresentert ved krisesentrene og utgjør hele 62 prosent av belegget, til tross for at de bare utgjør 14 prosent av befolkningen. Innvandrerkvinnene har også gjennomsnittlig lengre oppholdstid ved krisesentrene. Studien viste at kvinner med innvandrerbakgrunn og trygdemottakere er overrepresentert ved krisesentrene. Rus hos overgriper er assosiert med forekomst av fysisk partnervold både blant norske kvinner og kvinner med innvandrerbakgrunn, men sammenhengen er tydeligere for det norske utvalget. Den høye andelen kvinner med innvandrerbakgrunn som svarer «vet ikke» når de blir spurt om overgriper var ruspåvirket under overgrepene, understreker viktigheten av at slike spørsmål blir stilt på en kulturelt sensitiv måte.

  Fra 2004 til 2006 ble alle gravide kvinner i legemiddelassistert rehabilitering (LAR) invitert til å delta i en studie. Senter for Rus og Avhengighetsforskning (SERAF) kartla kvinnenes rusmiddelbruk, samt tilknyttede problemer. Kvinnene ble intervjuet i tredje trimester av svangerskapet, ett år og fire år etter fødselen. Resultatene viser at få mødre i legemiddelassistert rehabilitering bruker narkotika. Både under svangerskapet, samt ett år og fire år etter at barnet er født. Mødrene drikker heller ikke alkohol under svangerskapet. Rundt 1 av 3 sier de drikker noe alkohol ett år og fire år etter at barna ble født. Det dreier seg i all hovedsak om lavkonsum. Mange av mødrene rapporterte om psykiske problemer. Mengden psykiske problemer var høy på alle måletidspunktene, og høyest fire år etter at barna var født. Studien viser at de fleste barna (9 av 10) går i barnehage når de er fire år. Et flertall av familiene får oppfølging av barnevernet i form av preventive støttetiltak, slik som veiledning, avlastningshjem og lignende. Disse tjenestene bidrar til at kvinnene får mer tid til seg selv. Denne tiden kan benyttes til å ta tak i egne problemer, men mange bruker også tiden på jobb eller studier. Det eksisterer omfattende forskning som følger gravide i LAR-behandling gjennom svangerskapet og de første ukene eller månedene etter at barna er født. Denne studien er en av få som har fulgt disse sårbare familiene over tid. Målet har vært å undersøke hvordan mødrene klarer seg med tanke på videre rusbruk, psykiske problemer og andre problemer relatert til heroinavhengighet.

  Programmet starter med en hurtigtest av alkoholvaner. Fra tidligere forskning vet man at slike hurtigtester med enkel tilbakemelding har en positiv effekt på alkoholkonsum, men at denne effekten er ganske liten. Det som skiller Balance fra majoriteten av internettbaserte alkoholprogrammer er at Balance også tilbyr en intensiv selvhjelpsmodul til de som ønsker å redusere alkoholkonsumet sitt. Det er denne intensive selvhjelpsmodulen som vi har testet effekten av i denne studien. Basert på loddtrekning fikk den ene halvparten av deltagerne bruke hurtigtesten, mens den andre halvparten fikk tilbud om å bruke både hurtigtesten og den intensive selvhjelpsmodulen (dvs. det komplette Balance programmet). Begge gruppene av deltagere reduserte alkoholkonsumet fra oppstart til seks måneder etter. For alle analysene som sammenlignet denne reduksjonen mellom de to gruppene var det en gjennomgående tendens at gruppen som fikk tilbud om intensiv selvhjelp etter hurtigtesten reduserte alkoholkonsumet mer enn gruppen som ikke fikk intensiv tilbud om selvhjelp etter hurtigtesten. Denne forskjellen var statistisk signifikant for de fleste sammenligningene men ikke for alle. Derfor hefter det noe usikkerhet til resultatene. I sum må de likevel sies å være positive. En betydelig undergruppe av deltagere som fikk tilbud om intensiv selvhjelp valgte å ikke ta denne i bruk, eller brukte det så lite at man ikke kan forvente noen effekt. Dette tolkes som at tilbudet i sin nåværende form ikke passer alle i målgruppen. I et samfunnsperspektiv må en huske at på tross av at tilbudet ikke passer for alle og at effekten er moderat stor vil denne klassen av programmer kunne gi god samfunnsøkonomisk gevinst. Det er fordi kostanden ved å distribuere slike automatiserte selvhjelpsprogrammer er svært lav per person, samtidig som de kan nå svært mange som ellers ikke ville fått noe hjelp.

  Background: A large proportion of the prison population experiences substance use disorders (SUDs), which are associated with poor physical and mental health, social marginalization, and economic disadvantage. Despite the global situation characterized by the incarceration of large numbers of people with SUD and the health problems associated with SUD, people in prison are underrepresented in public health research. Objective: The overall objective of the PriSUD (Diagnosing and Treating Substance Use Disorders in Prison)-Nordic project is to develop new knowledge that will contribute to better mental and physical health, improved quality of life, and better life expectancies among people with SUD in prison. Methods: PriSUD-Nordic is based on a multidisciplinary mixed method approach, including the methodological perspectives of both quantitative and qualitative methods. The qualitative part includes ethnographic fieldwork and semistructured interviews. The quantitative part is a registry-based cohort study including national registry data from Norway, Denmark, and Sweden. The national prison cohorts will comprise approximately 500,000 individuals and include all people imprisoned in Norway, Sweden, and Demark during the period from 2000 to 2019. The project will investigate the prison population during three different time periods: before imprisonment, during imprisonment, and after release. Results: PriSUD-Nordic was funded by The Research Council of Norway in December 2019, and funding started in 2020. Data collection is ongoing and will be completed in the first quarter of 2022. Data will be analyzed in spring 2022 and the results will be disseminated in 2022-2023. The PriSUD-Nordic project has formal ethical approval related to all work packages. Conclusions: PriSUD-Nordic will be the first research project to investigate the epidemiology and the lived experiences of people with SUD in the Nordic prison population. Successful research in this field will have the potential to identify significant areas of benefit and will have important implications for ongoing policy related to interventions for SUD in the prison population.
