'Genetics, Economic Choices, and Economic Status' with Dr. Leandro Carvalho
Time and place: Oct. 24, 2022 1:00 PM – 2:00 PM, Harald Schjelderups Hus
Leandro Carvalho will present a paper studying the causal relationship between genetics, economic choices, and income. The genetic measure is the polygenic index for educational attainment (EA PGI). One's EA PGI is random conditional on the EA PGIs of one's parents, which is used to estimate its causal effects. The EA PGI affects educational and occupational choices as well as income. These choices underlie the relationship between genetics and income. Suggestive evidence is presented that fluid intelligence and present focus may partly explain how genetics affects choices. Genetic effects are economically meaningful, being of the same order of magnitude as effects of family environment.
Oslo Meetings for Genetics and Social Sciences: Spring Seminar on Women’s Day
Time and place: Mar. 8, 2022 2:15 PM – 5:00 PM, Harriet Holters hus, Seminar room 201, Moltke Moes vei 31
Oslo Meetings for Genetics and Social Sciences (OMGSS) is an interdisciplinary forum open to researchers in genetics (quantitative, molecular) and/or social sciences (psychology, sociology, demography, economics) and beyond. We aim to foster knowledge exchange between disciplines, increase collaboration, and develop practical skills and resources.
This March, to celebrate Women’s Day, our seminar will be centered around topics including long-term effects of antidepressant medication during pregnancy, and the link between genetics and gender equality. We have several international guest speakers from universities in London and Paris.
To sign up for the seminar, please contact Rosa Cheesman: rosacg@uio.no by Monday, March 7th.
Programme:
- 14:15-14:45 Mingling, followed by an introduction
- 14:45-15:10 Genetic Influences on Lifetime Income Increases with Gender Equality, Martin Isungset, Department of Sociology and Human Geography, University of Oslo
- 15:10-15:35 The Art of evolution: Genetically informed embryo selection, Felix Tropf, The Center for Research in Economics and Statistics, Paris
- 15:45-16:10 Treating postnatal depression with SSRI: Longitudinal associations with maternal and child outcome, Kate Liu, King’s College London
- 16:10-16:35 Mental health in families: one genomic and one qualitative study, Yasmin Ahmadzadeh, King’s College London
- 16:35-17:00 Mingling or pickup time.

The PROMENTA Genetics Network is hosting this one day science communication event, featuring two London based guest speakers.
Dr. Emily Wylde and Dr. Yasmin Ahmadzadeh will lead us through practical training in communicating your research and interactive discussion about the impact of miscommunication on diversity in science.

Resolving gene-environment correlation and interaction in intergenerational studies
Time and place: Feb. 25, 2019 9:30 AM – 12:00 PM, seminar room 3, Harald Schjelderups hus, Forskningsveien 3A
Parents provide both genes and environments for their children. The first proMENTA seminar will have four speakers on intergenerational transmission of risk, with a special focus on how to study this in the Norwegian Mother and Child Cohort study.
Programme
- Tom McAdams: «Stress during pregnancy and child emotional outcomes: Accounting for gene-environment correlation and exploring gene-environment interaction»
- Yasmin Ahmadzadeh: «Associations between maternal internalising and offspring temperament: Investigating both genetic and environmental intergenerational effects»
- Rosa Cheesman: «Separating child and parent genetic influences on anxiety at age 8 using family trios»
- Fartein Ask Torvik: «Parental education and psychopathology: A natural experiment»
McAdams, Ahmadzadeh, and Cheesman are affiliated with the Social, Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry Centre; Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience; King's College, London. Torvik is affiliated with the Norwegian Institute of Public Health.
